Things & Stuff

  • Things I’ve been doing

I’m trying to catch up with life. I just started a full-time job, and it’s very different for me! I’m used to working here and there on different projects. Now I am the full-time Director of Operations (or, as we like to say in-house, Chief of Stuff) for Foreign & Domestic. Hooray! It’s pretty awesome to work for a company that you adore so much. It’s so easy to overwork – there are so many things I want to do and accomplish for and with them, so I’m trying to step back and redefine my work/life boundaries. But still, I’m loving it. It’s TOO much fun.

Last week I was lucky enough to go on a GM Good Taste Tour with a few other “influencers” and Ned and Jodi. We traipsed around Austin, chauffeured in awesome cars, and were filmed for an upcoming video, which I’ll definitely link to once it’s done.

We started at Contigo – these guys know how to make BEAUTIFUL stuff! The cocktails and food were gorgeous, and I really enjoyed the tri-color pickles.

    contigo1

David and I got to hang out together, which was lovely. And yes, I colored my hair PURPLE! I absolutely love it, but I am so ready for it to stop bleeding purple in the shower. Mainly because it’s super hot in Austin, and I’m ready to go swimming, but not ready for a puddle of purple around me. 🙂

    5

It’s been so great to work with Jodi more – she’s such an awesome gal, and so freakin’ talented. We got to hang out on the GM tour, too.

    6

After Contigo and awesome barbecue at Freedmen’s (OMG fatty brisket is my fave), we had entrees at Foreign & Domestic. Which was, of course, amazing.

    9

After the tour was over, I somehow managed to score a Buick Enclave for a few days. OMG you guys. I drive a little Suzuki, which I’m very happy with. But this car… it was the smoothest ride I’ve ever had. It just glided along the road. It had all the bells and whistles – a sunroof and a moonroof, XM radio (with a dedicated CBC3 Station! Yay Canadian musicians!), a DVD player, a back-up camera, and 8 bajillion other things I didn’t know how to use – but what what I miss the most is how easy it was to drive. So someday, once I tire of Little Pica (as my Suzuki is named), I shall hope for a Buick.

    16

Working at the restaurant during the day has been so much fun. Sometimes I get to see guys like this.

    17

And other awesome/gruesome/amazing things. (Live crabs! Growing pea shoots! Duck tongues!)

I’ve also been hangin’ with pals – Rachel & Logan came over and shared some amazing pastrami with us. We always feel so lucky when Logan cooks for us.

    18

We also had a VERY HOT Saturday at Wimberley Market Days. I didn’t find much this time, I think because I was just miserable with the heat, but I did pick up some pickles and a little gift for my mama, which I really need to mail off soon.

    19

We also had a dinner with the sixlet at Olive & June, which was great. We had some great cocktails and lovely snacks, and they didn’t seem to mind our excessive laughing and general fun.

    20

I had a girls’ night with my gal pals, which was great as always. What would I do without my girls?

    21

I’ve also managed to get the F&D staff addicted to JuiceLand. The staff lunch of choice now is usually a green smoothie of some kind.

    22

But most days, I’m hanging out at the counter at F&D, working on my laptop, laughing at the antics of these amazing chefs. Life is good, folks.

    23

I hope you all have a wonderful weekend!♥

I got a new phone! Well, my old phone was broken, and the little power button wouldn’t work, and also it wouldn’t hold a charge for very long, and hey! I got a new phone!

And it comes with this nifty 8-megapixel camera, which makes me happy. I haven’t been lugging around my dSLR lately, and my little iPhone 5 is doing just fine with photos. 🙂

Justin reminded me that I love soft-boiled eggs. So this weekend, I whipped some up with toast soldiers and was VERY HAPPY.

We had an early dinner at Elizabeth Street on Saturday. Yeesh, I love that place. This time they had brisket and avocado buns on the specials menu, and holy moly they were amazing. We also had our regular pork spring rolls.

    This guy. THIS GUY.

I strayed off the path and ordered something new – the fried redfish fried rice. Zomg. Good. And then I had leftovers, and then I left them at Aimee’s house. Sadness.

My favorite, Vietnamese iced coffee. With Stumptown beans. Yum. Also left in Aimee’s fridge. (Sorry, Aimee!)

The reason I left things in Aimee’s fridge is because sometimes we hang out until the wee hours of the night drinking far too many gin cocktails and playing Cards Against Humanity. I highly recommend this. If you can get an invite to Aimee’s house, she has a SERIOUS stock of amazing snacks.

I had a lazy Sunday lunch of open-faced egg salad sandwiches. The key to an amazing egg salad is pickles. The key to an amazing anything is pickles.

Yesterday we took a walk and had drinks and a late lunch at Clark’s. Their bread/radish/butter/salt thing rocks.

Justin had oysters, of course. His report: The Beavertails were large but tasty, the Cook’s Cocktail were rockin’, and the Fancy Sweets were maybe past their best season. I can report that the horseradish, cocktail sauce, mignonette and crackers were fantastic as usual.

Hey, it’s me! And a Cocchi Americano spritzer.

    0l 05-28-clarks4

We shared the salmon gravlax, one of Justin’s favorite things in the world. I’d be happy with just the bread, crème fraîche and dill, but don’t tell anyone. There’s also a tuna salad sandwich behind that mountain of fries.

    0m 05-28-clarks5

We saw this flower on our walk home. WTF? What is this thing? It’s like the craziest alien flower ever, and I love it.

This weekend I lost myself in the world of Zelda Fitzgerald. I really loved this book – given that so many seem to think she was a loon who threw F. Scott Fitzgerald off course, it’s refreshing to have a look at a possible other side, novel or no. After I finished, I had to have a Fitzgerald cocktail to celebrate. And then I re-watched Midnight in Paris. Hooray for the Roaring Twenties!

  • In my head

Lately my head has been super-full. Ironically, it’s full of things like, “I should meditate to clear my mind. I should practice yoga. I should eat well and exercise and be a better person and yada yada.”

Do you ever have these thoughts, throughout the day? And late at night when all you want to do is fall asleep? They keep me awake, all these shoulds. I should be the perfect wife/daughter/employee/friend. I should eat healthy foods and exercise and do creative things. I should take walks and take photos and write letters and read more books and save the world.

Food is a biggie for me. Blame it on my nutrition degree. Blame it on my fear of diabetes and heart disease and colon cancer and breast cancer. Blame it on Mark Bittman and Michael Pollan and Walter Willet. Blame it on me. But every day, the first thing I think about is what I’m going to eat that day. Every little choice becomes a big one – I have a bad habit of thinking in extremes, in long term, and not living in the moment. I absorb so much food stress – and right now it seems like the whole world is talking about food.

One day last year, I saw a woman walking down the street, eating an ice cream bar. She looked so calm and happy, just enjoying the sun and the ice cream and life. And I felt so sad – when is the last time I allowed myself to enjoy an ice cream bar? A good old-fashioned, Nestle Crunch ice cream bar? When I think about it, my mind is filled with words: Processed. Fake. Fatty. Too sweet. Not local. Not organic. Not cool.

I want to quiet that voice. I want to eat whatever the hell I want to eat, and not worry about what the food police would say (who are these food police, anyway?). I want to eat hot dogs with bright green relish without an ounce of guilt.

I often feel angry about it all. I am not overweight. I am not unhealthy. My diet is probably better than most Americans. But I beat myself up about every food decision, and I can never meet these crazy goals of mine because I don’t even know what they are. One day it’s organic, another day it’s local. Vegan, omnivore, 9 fruits and veggies a day, no processed foods, home-cooked, at local restaurants, natural, no preservatives, hormone-free.

I am tired, internets. I am tired of all the voices telling me what I should eat every day. I want to eat my food without apologies, without wishing it were more photogenic and bloggable, without cringing at the lack of greens and hemp and chia seeds. I just want to eat. Why is that so hard?

And so I’ve decided to turn down the anxiety dial on food. (Because I also worry about work and money and friends and family and world peace. If you need someone to worry for you, I can do it! I excel at worrying.) It has been AMAZING. Yesterday morning Justin made sausage and potato tacos, and I ate them for breakfast, lunch and dinner. And then I had bubbly and a Hershey bar. Today I’m enjoying a mocha from Starbucks. And you know what? I feel fine.

I saw this today on SwissMiss, and it feels just perfect for this moment. Just dance, just live, just have a great weekend.♥

  • And things

    salmon2

Tonight I made a version of this dish. I just used kale (no brussels sprouts), and I topped it with some simple grilled salmon. I’ve been feeling fishy lately, but I haven’t felt like cooking fish. Today I stopped at Central Market and picked up some pre-grilled salmon, and it was such a perfect solution. I need to remember this! Make some awesome veggies or salads, pick up some cooked meats. For some reason, cooking meat is still kinda weird to me. It’s been ages since I was a vegetarian, but I guess I never really picked that back up. Anyway.

Also, today I somehow ate kale three times. This dinner, a kale and tamari salad at lunch, and a kale-apple-ginger-lemon juice. Maybe tomorrow will be a carrot day.

In other news, WE HAVE OWLS! Today, I was randomly staring up at the trees in our back courtyard and gasped when I saw two eyes STARING AT ME. So far we have seen two of them – and they seem pretty small, as owls go. Super cute, and sometimes creepy. Just last week, we watched a family of raccoons (mama and four babies) relocate from our neighbor’s windowsill to some dark spot behind their house. And today a bluejay was yelling at Roux for watching him through the screen door. I feel like Snow White.

    Other bits:

    • Tomorrow I’m going to see The Great Gatsby. I’ve been waiting for this day for over a year now, and I’m kind of freaking out about it. It’s one of my favorite books. I have a first edition print of this hanging in my living room. I adore Baz Luhrmann. I can’t WAIT to see it. I might not be able to sleep tonight.
    • I’ve been finding some seriously funny animated re-tellings lately. Like The Matrix retold by one guy’s mom. Or Star Wars retold by some guy’s uninterested friend. Or this joke told by one guy’s drunk wife. Love it.
    • This cute comic.
    • I kinda want to make a gelatin dessert.

I hope everyone has a wonderful May week.♥

  • Derby Day!

    derby16

Every year, we look forward to Derby Day. We get dolled up in our finest and spend the day at a farm drinking mint juleps and cheering on random horses (whichever has the best name) and generally having a great time. This is all thanks to our wonderful friends David and Joe, who host the city’s best Derby Day party every year. (You can see all of our photos here.)

I also made a weekend video! It’s been a while since I’ve done one, and I’m not sure why. They’re so fun! Here are the basics for this weekend:

    Friday
Rachel & Logan came to our casa so that Logan could whip up an amazing sushi dinner. He always goes all out – miso soup, edamame, snapper with cucumber and crab, salmon with avocado and cucumber, inari, chocolate mochi cake with strawberry gelato and tiny jugs of Yakult. He rocks.

    Saturday
We hung out at home with coffee and toasted, buttered baguette, and a lunch of hot dogs and mashed potatoes (we’re classy, yo). Then it was Derby Day madness! Rather than my usual dress-and-large-hat combo, I opted for a 40s look, in vintage goodness. Justin was gorgeous as always. There were Dizzy Derby races, juleps, games of corn hole, bocce ball, and all kinds of preppy fun. After Derby Day, a huge group of us cabbed over to Foreign & Domestic and ordered everything on the menu. Literally.

    Sunday
We relaxed at home in the morning, and then Kate and Meghan stopped in to produce a photo shoot for a local magazine on our lawn. I got an amazing vintage canning book out of the deal. In the evening, I walked down to Winflo to meet the girls and celebrate Jodi’s big win. On my walk home, I saw my friend Alex at Clark’s, and so of course I met Justin there for bubbly and oysters.

Such a fun (but exhausting) weekend! I’m looking forward to some quiet time tonight. Just me, a kitty cat, and a book. I hope you all have a wonderful week!
