  • Thunderheart Bison: Ranch to Trailer

So there’s a new food trailer near our place (on West 5th Street, between Baylor and Walsh), run by the peeps who own Thunderheart Bison. We walked down there the other day and tried a few things.

This is the Asian steak salad – tender bison sirloin, greens, tomatoes, crunchies, and sesame dressing. This was seriously good! In the background is the soft bison taco, which also had a really great flavor and fresh toppings.

We also tried the oxtail pho. You don’t expect to get pho from a trailer, but this was a satisfying, rich and deep soup, perfect for the winter. Justin didn’t get much of this, because I hogged it all up. The broth was so beefy! (Bison-y?)

We were really impressed with the food – everything was full of flavor and had obviously been well-prepared. We met Cat, the co-owner/chef, who had such a great attitude, and an obvious love for local meats and produce.

Next time we’ll try the coffee-braised short ribs, or maybe the bison burger. We saw someone else’s burger and it was ginormous! Actually, I’ll probably just order the same things again, because they were so good. I end up doing that a lot – I want to try new things, but once I find something fantastic, I just keep ordering it over and over again. 🙂

On the tea front, today I’m sipping Sleepytime Vanilla, which is really yummy. Thank you all for your suggestions!

    Happy Monday, everybody!

This is Bela, the neighborhood cat. He comes to visit us a lot.

Today I felt like cooking. Brunch was leftover cornbread dressing, made into patties and pan-fried, topped with fried eggs. Dinner was conchas cooked with a bit of leftover bean broth and tomatoes, topped with cheese and cilantro. And this evening, I was chilly, and our little space heater just wasn’t cutting it, so I decided to turn on the oven to warm things up. And if the oven’s on, there may as well be something baking in it, right? So I baked some oatmeal-chocolate chip cookies. It was a good cooking day.

I’ve been testing recipes for Book #2, which can be fun and can be stressful. It’s expensive to test recipes – and now I’m left with a good half-pound of duck fat! I’m sure I could use it for something, but I’m tempted to give it to a friend, because the next recipe I test will leave me with too much bacon. Such hardships, eh?

I’ve taken a nice break from things this holiday weekend – I’ve only just realized that I haven’t taken any photos, or even instagram-ed anything. I did, however, capture some of Justin’s baby/childhood photos while we were visiting his folks – he’s so freakin’ cute!

Yesterday I went to Renegade Craft Fair, and bought a gorgeous print and two bracelets. Then we hopped over to the City-Wide Garage Sale, and I scored an awesome watch for $1.00! I don’t even want to put a new battery in it – I just want it to forever be 12:28.

I’ve been feeling pretty run-down lately. I could sleep all day. I wonder whether it has to do with it getting dark so early, and getting chilly outside, and winter coming and all that. Today I gave myself a pep talk and cleaned the house and cooked. Do you guys slow down in the winter? I kept thinking it would be lovely to take walks in the cool air, but now I prefer to stay in my slippers under one of our handmade blankets. 🙂

I keep searching for the perfect nighttime tea. I drink Sleepytime, and somes decaf chai, but I want more options. I don’t really like fruity teas (hot – I love them iced), so I’m thinking something smooth and sweet and caffeine free, of course. Any suggestions?

I’ve been going through our old hard drive, finding songs I had forgotten about for years. Today this is in my head.

I’ve been trying to take more walks lately. I’m thinking audiobooks will help, but I’m not sure if I can focus on them enough to actually get anything out of the book. I think I’ll start with someone entertaining, with an engaging voice, like Sarah Vowell.

I finally watched Breaking Dawn today. I’m such a sucker for romance – the wedding was beautiful, and I feel like we finally get to see Edward and Bella’s love for each other in a positive way, instead of just turmoil and angsty faces. I don’t think the earlier films captured that enough. Also, Robert Pattinson speaking Portuguese? Dreamy. I’m a nerd, but you knew this already.

I made a kale, potato and sausage soup out of things we had hanging around the kitchen. I really feel like Tamar Adler’s book has empowered me in my own kitchen. Between her and Nigel Slater, I am constantly inspired.

One of the best things about having a gas stove is that you can toast marshmallows any time you want. And then you can make a smore with Nutella and graham crackers.

We watched The Fall this weekend. It was so amazingly good – I cried so freakin’ hard, and it was just beautifully done. I highly recommend it.

Today’s soundtrack: Lo-Fi. Gotta love Sophie Koh.

Hope you all have a great week!

Matt Shook from JuiceLand introduced me to Yerba Mate. I drank it iced, and it was quite lovely, and I swear I was more energetic today. 🙂

I made brunch – an omelet stuffed with zucchini, tomatoes, mushrooms, garlic and parmesan, plus toasted baguette and jams.

We spent the day overhauling the kitchen – we removed the cabinet doors, installed new lighting, and re-organized everything. I’ll post some photos soon. So at about 11pm, when we were tired and hungry, we walked to 24 Diner for dinner.

I had the stuffed chard – it was so good! Salad of arugula, cucumber, wheat berries and tomato, plus swiss chard stuffed with rice and veggies, then topped with a yogurt sauce.

I’m exhausted, and it’s 4am. Sunday is going to be a challenge, I think.

    Today’s soundtrack: Hey DJ. 🙂
