Things & Stuff

Lunch: veggie sandwich with vegan mayo from Wheatsville Co-op. Who knew vegan mayo was so delicious?

    Snack 1: kiwi.

Snack 2: vegan oatmeal cream pie from Wheatsville Co-op. Scrumptious.

Dinner: vegetable and cannellini bean saute and cheese toast.

Back to center: I think the only thing I can count on is that I will frequently change my mind. I’ve been reading The China Study, and by a quarter of the way through, I was convinced that I needed to be vegan IMMEDIATELY. By this evening, I had read much of the book, and started growing skeptical about the author’s bias and choice of nutrition studies to highlight. Then I talked to my friend Lindsay (who’s also a dietitian), and she mentioned hearing the author speak and be quite crazy about his vegan diet, and using statistics to insinuate causality instead of just correlation. (I hated statistics class, but I’m now thankful that I understand these tidbits.) So now I’m back to my normal state of just eating dinner. Which is good, because I do tend to think in black and white, in extremes, in “right” and “wrong.” Lindsay can always pull me back to center, for which I am grateful.

Weird fears: Tonight we’ve been working on income taxes, which is tedious and somehow a bit scary. I’m always afraid we’ll mess something up and then FBI agents will show up at our house in the middle of the night and take us away to jail, because I forgot to add a receipt for a mousepad. Again, I think in extremes. 🙂

Chickens: I don’t think I’ve mentioned that our neighbors have chickens. We can see them from our window some days, pecking around, rooting through the grass, and generally being cute.

Breakfast: shredded wheat with soy milk.

Late lunch at Tan My: veggie spring rolls. I didn’t bring my camera, so these two were shot with my iPhone.

More late lunch: pho tai chin. My favorite part is dipping the meat into a mixture of plum sauce and chile garlic sauce. 🙂

    Evening snack: honeycrisp apple.

So! Another week bites the dust. I’ve been a bit down, but am feeling more up, which is good. Today we drove all over town running errands. We spent way too much time at the Asian market – it’s so overwhelming in there! So many sauces and noodles and snacks and stuff and stuff and stuff. Then we stopped for pho, then we did our major grocery shopping at Central Market. I planned lots of cooking this week, and half our basket was just vegetables and fruit. Which is a good thing, of course.

As for the film festival, it didn’t turn out as well as we’d hoped – we bought film passes, but they had sold so many badges that the theaters filled up before we could get seats. Justin was turned away from a few movies, and we both just got frustrated, so we ended up doing other things. We did get to see Danny DeVito, Carla Gugino, and Rosario Dawson at the premier of their internet film, A Girl Walks Into a Bar. Danny DeVito is hilarious, Carla Gugino is so graceful and beautiful, and Rosario Dawson looked so painfully thin that it made me sad.

We meandered downtown a bit to see all the SXSW music madness. I was hoping to be inspired by some great indie fashion, but there wasn’t much to see aside from high-waisted cut-off shorts over torn black pantyhose, and long shirts over teeny tiny shorts.

I hope you are all doing okay out there – it seems quite chaotic in the world these days.

  • Happysad.

Rachel and Logan are leaving tomorrow for an around-the-world trip. They’ll be gone for over a year. They’ll explore a bajillion countries, eat local specialties, take gorgeous photos, meet new people, and see several oceans. Tonight we stopped by to bring them dinner and give them hugs, and I managed to hold it together until I got in the car afterward. I cried and cried, and Justin held my hand and told me he loved me, and we drove back to our little home. I will miss them terribly, but I’m so excited for them, and for myself, since I’ll be able to hear all about their adventures soon enough.

Bon voyage, Coops! We love you bunches.

Breakfast: tall soy mocha. Starbucks has green cup holders now. It matched my office supplies.

Leftover pizza from Little Deli. I’m 92 pages into Neverwhere, and I still don’t love it. I’m not sure I’ll keep reading it. However, I did love this sentence: There was no moon, but the night sky was a riot of crisp and glittering autumn stars. Lovely.

    Justin in the corner!

Dinner: appetizer plate at Chuy’s. We decided to eat here tonight, since it will be impossible to get a table here once SXSW starts on Friday.

Dessert: mini Reese’s peanut butter cups.

Thank you all so much for your very sweet comments about poco-cocoa’s 6th anniversary! I am so happy that I’ve been able to have this little space for my thoughts and photos for so long, and I’m so glad that you all are here to share it with me. 🙂

Tonight I’ve been watching trailers for the films that will be screened at the SXSW festival. There are so many! I’ve only made it through the first two days of the schedule, and I’m already overwhelmed. At any rate, starting Friday, Justin and I will be at the movies during every possible hour of the non-work day, through March 20. I’ll keep you updated on what we see.

In other news, I watched the first two episodes of True Blood. I can’t decide what I think about it – it’s fun to see the book come to life on screen, and I actually really like Anna Paquin as Sookie Stackhouse, but I’m just not sure yet. I agree with Ai, I do like the way those southern men and vampires say “Sookeh.” For those of you who have seen more episodes, does Tara’s horrible southern accent get any better? Please say yes.

  • Six years of poco-cocoa!

I just realized that Monday (March 7th) was the 6th anniversary of the day I started poco-cocoa! Can you believe it? Six years of blogging. Six years of memories and photographs and lists and music and videos and comments. Six years ago I was working as a cook at a bed and breakfast. I was vegetarian. I had one little orange cat. None of my friends had babies yet. I was beginning to sew and embroider and knit. I was cooking more, and dining out less, and blogging constantly.

Things have changed so much in six years. My life has changed. My cameras have changed. But I’m still me, and I’m still here.

What do you think, internets? Do we have another six years in us? 🙂
