Things & Stuff

  • Saturday

Breakfast: I stopped at the farmers’ market to pick up our growler of cold-brewed coffee from the Tipsies. I got a mocha to go, and I think it’s official – I’ve moved on to less-sweet lattes.

Lunch: Ham/swiss/tomato/butter sandwich, plus chips and queso. And Roux. Justin watched the women’s world cup on his iPhone while we ate. (Japan! Who knew?!)

Dinner: Fried potato and red chile-beef tacos. We made red chile sauce, then used that to make a ground beef and bean topping for the fry bread tacos we’re making at tomorrow’s supper club. We figured we could spare a bit for our tacos tonight. πŸ™‚

Drink: Justin made us rye old-fashioneds. I’m a cheap date, because I like Old Overholt, which is maybe $14 a bottle.

Dessert: I made another batch of ice cream! This time it’s coffee-stout ice cream, and it’s stupendous. Justin had a coneful, and I had a spoonful, plus a taste of these little Russian butter biscuits and some halva that Justin picked up at the Russian market. Yum.

Snack: Marcona almonds, my favorite. They’re so expensive, though, so I try to eat just a few at a time. And there’s Roux again. I think he likes being in photos.

Snack #2: Plumcot. You need lots of snacks when you’re watching movies – tonight we watched Kung Fu Panda and True Grit, and both were excellent.

I love the library. I can pick up eleventeen books, and if I don’t like one, I can stop reading it and return it. Such freedom! I usually just go straight to the new books section, and pick out a few that look good. That’s how I found The Sea Captain’s Wife, which is now one of my favorite books.

In other news, I seem to have adopted Justin’s schedule. We stay up until 2 or 3am, and sleep in until 9 or 10. This is okay except that I really wanted to start eating breakfast again, and I’m not hungry until lunch. I suppose I could start eating breakfast for lunch, but then when would I eat lunch foods?

    Tomorrow, supper club!

Breakfast: soy mocha. A toast to my last day at the office. πŸ™‚

Lunch: I stopped for some groceries at Central Market and picked up this “French vegetable salad.” I didn’t love it, so I picked out the potatoes and tomatoes and tossed the rest.

    .

Lunch, part 2: I had some leftover pasta and zucchini.

Snack: juicy red plum. It was so juicy I had to stand over the sink to eat it. It rocked.

Afternoon snack: fried pickle chips at Cuatros. I decided to order something crazy and ended up with this bright green drink that had raspberry rum and melon liquor. Bad choice, my friends. It was so sickly sweet and fake. I need to stick to the classics.

Speaking of classics… we decided to hang out at Tigress Pub for the evening. I had a corpse reviver, Justin had a beer. We ran into our friends Mike and Joel there, so we stayed much longer than we had planned. Then Justin, Mike and I headed to Foreign & Domestic for dinner. We felt the need to celebrate some things. We shared everything.

There were two evening specials: This was an amazing pork rillette with toasted brioche and herb salad. I could eat this every day, I think.

The other special was the pork terrine, also tasty, with maybe horseradish? I can’t remember.

Grilled leg of lamb with grilled onions, fennel, and spicy labne. That fennel! Yum.

My favorite of the night: Summer squash ‘tofu’ with succotash, eggplant and sweet onion broth. I think they pureed tofu with summer squash, then reformed it into a square. It was amazing.

Wagyu flank steak, tomatoes and potato butter. There were fried green tomatoes, and tomato chips – so good.

Dessert: brownie sundae topped with cherry caramel and shoestring fries.

And my current favorite, strawberry-rhubarb fried pie with sesame ice cream. Did you ever have a toaster strudel when you were younger? From the freezer section? This is like a toaster strudel on crack.

Coffee, of course. And then we headed back to Tigress Pub!

Mike had one of Jason’s specialty drinks, an aperol Tom Collins. I had Jason’s rum swizzle.

There’s just something wonderful about Tigress Pub.

This probably doesn’t mean much to anyone but me, but I finally organized the bag situation at Casa Brasil. It made me so happy to see all those bags in their own little spaces. πŸ™‚

Breakfast at Joe’s Bakery: picadillo taco and bean and cheese taco. After our early-morning jaunt to organize coffee bags, we stopped for breakfast at Joe’s. Joe’s on a weekday morning is heaven – everything is slow-paced, and there’s just a different feel to it. Also, Joe’s beans are my favorite beans ever.

Lunch: same as yesterday – bread, butter, ham, Swiss.

Dinner: linguine with shredded zucchini, from Super Natural Every Day. People. I love this book already. Justin tasted this dish and said, “we have to have this once a week.”

Dessert: I finished making the ice cream! This is sweet corn and blackberry-raspberry ice cream from Jeni’sΒ Splendid Ice Creams at Home. People! I love this book, too. This ice cream is so freakin’ amazing – the texture is perfect, it tastes amazing, and it’s gorgeous. Tomorrow I’m picking up ingredients for another batch, this time a coffee-stout flavor. Yum.

Little LOVES to snuggle with Justin when he sits in the living room. She’ll curl up and get comfy in two seconds flat, and then she’ll keep snuggling in until she ends up like this, snuggled into his neck. It’s super cute.

Lunch: sandwich with buttered bread, ham and Swiss. It’s my favorite.

Snack: Mocha soy frappuccino. I like the iced mochas better.

Dinner: We ate at Takoba. We shared guacamole and ceviche…

Plus a lovely bowl of posole. I had a mojito, and Justin had a michelada. Their micheladas are the bomb.

To continue my rum night, I made us Bahama Mamas from Dale Degroff’s book, while I cooked up sweet corn ice cream.

In making sweet corn ice cream, you end up with a few corn kernels that have been cooked in cream, milk and sugar. Should you throw them away? Of course not! You should snack on them the rest of the night. πŸ™‚

Tomorrow, I’ll churn the ice cream, layer it with blackberry-raspberry sauce, and freeze it for a bit. Then we’ll (finally) taste it! Hopefully it will be as delicious as I imagine it will be. πŸ™‚

  • Tuesday

Breakfast: iced tall soy mocha with 1 pump of chocolate. Do you know that a regular mocha has 3 pumps in it? I have deduced that one is plenty for me. Next thing you know I’ll be drinking straight lattes. πŸ™‚

Snack: chocolate cake. I went back to the office to train the new employee, and M. had baked this cake. When M. bakes, you eat it, because you know it’s going to be delicious. Tomorrow I will beg her for the recipe.

Lunch: I stopped at Tacodeli before grocery shopping. This is a tacoloco and a picadillo taco. I liked the tacoloco better.

The rest of the afternoon/evening we just snacked when we were hungry.

I started with some leftover pasta and tomatoes.

I tried a “Tentation” apple. Meh, I got bored with it halfway through.

So then I sliced it up and ate it with sliced baby Swiss cheese. Much better. I also got this lovely card today from my friends B. and C. They’re getting married very soon.

Then I had a slice of ham rolled up in a toasted tortilla while I browsed my new ice cream book. I’ve decided on my first ice cream flavor to make: sweet corn and black-raspberry. Tonight I made the blackberry-raspberry sauce; tomorrow I’ll make the sweet corn ice cream.

And finally, two chocolate cookies – my favorite.

At first Roux wanted his photo taken. But then he changed his mind. πŸ™‚
