Things & Stuff

  • Just thinking

Today I wanted to tell you that I made a juice for lunch, with kale, carrots, ginger, apple and strawberries, and it was wonderful. And then I made salmon with asparagus and chive butter for dinner, and then we had the rest of my homemade ice cream in cones for dessert (sweet corn and berry for me, coffee stout for Justin). And then we watched Another Year, which was very slow, but very wonderful, and it made me want to own a house with a lovely porch and backyard so that I could invite people over and feed them and house them when they need it the most. And then we took a walk around the neighborhood, and talked about trips to foreign lands and growing old together and how lovely it is to lie on a beach. And now I’m sitting here, telling you all about it.

I also wanted to say that a few days ago, I saw a woman walking her dog very early in the morning, and she had a rosary in one hand. And I thought, how lovely that must be, to walk quietly in the early morning hours and pray. And I thought maybe I could craft a necklace with my loved ones’ names written on each bead, and take early morning walks and take the time to pray for each person. And I have yet to craft this necklace, but I really want to do it.

And another morning, I saw a man walking two cats. He walked in front of them down the sidewalk, and occasionally would turn around and meow at them, and they would answer, and scuttle a bit faster to catch up with him. I thought that was cute.

So that’s what’s going on here. Hope you’re all doing well this week.

    Dear Husband,

I love that when I’m not feeling well, you know that the proper medicine is cuddling. You can always make me feel better.

    Dear iPad,

You bring me the loveliest things. Like Saveur magazine, and interactive Martha Stewart Living, and interactive Everyday Food, and The Fantastic Flying Books of Mr. Morris Lessmore. Today I found out I can get Italian, and French, and Japanese cooking magazines with you, too. I do love you.

    Dear Roux Stick,

You have taken to meowing loudly at the door to get my attention, so that I’ll pull up the ottoman next to my desk and pet you until you curl up and calm down. But then when I stop petting you and go back to work, you return to the door and meow loudly again. To the moon, Roux Stick.

    Dear Brain,

Lately you’ve been overwhelmed with maybes and shoulds and possiblys. I feel such a strong need to create things, and yet such a fear of beginning. Should I bind books? Draw? Photograph? Collage? Sew? Embroider? I don’t know where to begin, and though I’m happy for your many ideas, I think I need help in sorting them out. Maybe we need a bigger journal.

Hope you’re all having a lovely Bastille Day!

Breakfast: iced coffee, in my new reusable cup. I quite like it.

    Lunch: plain old ramen.

    Dessert: two chocolate cookies.

Dinner: pizza from Spartan. On the left is the Hades: tomato sauce, Italian sausage, green olives, herbed ricotta and pepper flakes. On the right is the Agamemnon: cilantro pesto, chicken tossed with Salt Lick barbecue sauce, red onion and jalapeños. The Agamemnon will rock your world.

I haven’t been feeling well, so we’ve had a lot of comfort food. I’m thinking a banana split for dinner might just be the answer. Or an apple-ginger-cucumber-plum juice. Or a nap.

Oops, I missed posting a few days.

    Breakfast: iced coffee.

Lunch: I made another salad with the leftover supper club toppings. I forget how much I like iceberg lettuce.

Snack: I had a taco with potatoes and red chile. I got this little tin box, and now I’m trying to figure out the perfect use for it.

Dinner: We went to a pig roast and cocktail party at Contigo. I didn’t manage to photograph much, AND I forgot to grab a menu, but there were lots of really tasty cocktails and nibbles. These were two white whiskey drinks – I love the spherical ice.

All of the food was based on the roast pig. Blood sausage, pork tenderloin, chicharrones dipped in chocolate, anything and everything pork-related.

Arugula salad with pork heart, crostini with anchovy and pork, roasted pork with lemon zest… anyway, you get the picture. It was very, very good.

And although it was crazy-hot and I got 84 mosquito bites, I really liked Contigo.

Breakfast: toast with butter and jam, iced coffee. Justin had yogurt and fruit, bagel and cream cheese, and womens’ World Cup. (Go USA!)

Snack: I was still hungry, so I had a bit of red chile and the rest of Justin’s bagel. 🙂

And then it was time for Supper Club!

Justin and I were hosting at our friends’ home (ours is too small to host), so we brought the main, drink and some dessert. This is my friend A.’s recipe for sangria. We got all crafty and froze a vase full of orange slices and ice to keep it cool, then fished out the marinated fruit and skewered it so it could be added to each glass. We thought it turned out to be lovely.

See! Pretty glass of sangria. Plus cashews, pistachios, and two Mexican cheeses from J. and L.

Chips, queso, and watermelon from B. and A.

    B. and A. also brought these amazing jalapeno cheese bread things – I HAVE to get this recipe.

    A. and I. brought this gorgeous peach, jalapeno, and farmer’s cheese salad, tossed with herbs from their garden. It was wonderful.

For the main dish, Justin and I made fry bread tacos. I made the tortillas a bit smaller so everyone could have one or two, and we topped it with red chile, lettuce, tomato and cheese. I looooove fry bread tacos.

I forgot to photograph dessert: J. used the leftover fry bread to toss with cinnamon sugar and make bunuelos. We also had the two ice creams I had made this week. Yum.

Midnight snack: I tossed the leftover fry bread toppings (lettuce, tomato and queso chihuahua) into a little salad. It reminded me of this “chopped salad” that I used to get in high school at this tiny diner in west Texas called Hi-Neighbor. Theirs had chunks of ham and egg, and then was tossed with Ranch. I would either order that or a burger and fries, and it was always about $4. I don’t think that place is open anymore.

So Supper Club was great, as usual, though we missed the Coops terribly. You South Americans out there, if you happen to see the Coops roaming around your country, please figure out some way to send them home to me soon. 🙂
