Things & Stuff

  • Monday

Breakfast: frosted shredded wheat with soy milk. When I was little, my dad used to call these “pillows.” As in, “you want a bowl of pillows?”

Lunch, part 1: steamed cauliflower. I somehow managed to have a three-course meal.

Lunch, part 2: I have a strange love for noodle soups. I know they’re instant and processed and weird, but I like them.

Lunch, part 3: My coworker baked little carrot cakes studded with chocolate chips and nuts, topped with cream cheese frosting flecked with orange zest. Delicous. I left half for Justin.

Snack: a handful of pretzel sticks.

Dinner: leftover black beans and a few chips with guacamole.

  • Sunday

Lunch with B. and L. at Abel’s on the Lake: I’ve never been here before, but they had a dog-friendly patio and B. and L. knew of it, so we went. It was chilly on the patio! Anyway, this is chips and queso and my bloody Mary. I actually didn’t eat any of this – I didn’t like the queso, and I totally forgot when ordering this very pretty bloody Mary that I don’t really like vodka, either. So I gave it to L. and let them eat the queso (L. said it was a very good bloody Mary). 🙂

Lunch, continued: I did, however, eat this avocado cheeseburger with fries. It was a huge burger, so I didn’t finish it, but it was very good.

Dinner: Ramen with poached egg. I learned how to do this all in one pot from Ai’s blog.

Snack: a chocolate covered doughnut. It was meh – it wasn’t Hostess brand. See both the kitties in the background? They were poking around in the corners.

Kind of a junk-food day. Maybe tomorrow I’ll actually eat a vegetable. 🙂

  • Pretty post

I think my Zombie Party post scared a few people! Also, I’m not used to scary/creepy things staring at me from my blog, so here’s a pretty picture to move the zombie post down the line a bit. 🙂

This is our little vintage corner in our house, with books and letterpress stuff we’ve picked up at antique markets and such. See? Pretty! 😉

  • Zombie Party

This weekend we helped throw a surprise zombie birthday party for our friend Bud. He loves Halloween and costumes and horror movies and haunted houses (there was even a documentary made about him). Every year he does an elaborate costume for Halloween, and he makes it so fun. So his wife, amazing woman that she is, somehow managed to plan a ginormous 40th birthday party for him, complete with about 30 of his friends, all zombiefied by a makeup artist, plus food and drinks and music and decorations and lighting and firepits and Rock Band – and he had no clue! He showed up to his house last night (Justin had kept him busy all day) and as they drove in the driveway, about 30 zombies attacked the car. He was nervous and creeped out and extremely happy, and it was so much fun. I’ve never been a part of a surprise party that was actually a true surprise like this. I think Bud was honored and amazed to see how much we all love him and support him and are willing to become zombies just for him. I wish I had taken more photos!

Today I’m extremely tired – I had no idea how much work it takes to put on a party! It’s 6:00 p.m. and I’m already ready for bed. 🙂

  • Saturday

Brunch: toast with butter and jam and a bit of bacon.

Dinner: I spent the day at my friend L.’s house, decorating, cooking and preparing for her husband B.’s surprise 40th birthday party. It was a zombie party (B. is a HUGE Halloween/zombie fan), so we made themed food like the zombie cheese fingers and mummy dogs above. I also snacked on beef skewers, birthday cake, queso, guacamole, empanadas, mummy pizzas, and black bean soup. L. hired makeup artists to transform us all into zombies before the party – it was fantastic.
