Things & Stuff

    Recent moments:

    We sat at the bar and they were sitting next to us. He was a cowboy, a musician, a storyteller. His mustache curled up at the edges, and his t-shirt said, “Old people rule.” She had big eyes and kept her hand on his leg and interrupted his stories to make sure we knew just how talented and wonderful he was. He gave us his music. We bought them a beer.

    They sat on the porch steps and we sat on the grass as the moon came up. The cat drifted between us, rubbing against our legs and stalking insects.

    *   *   *   *   *   *    *   *   *

    There was that one second when I realized I was looking into a video camera, and I thought, “which side is my good side?”

    *   *   *   *   *   *    *   *   *

    He asked (in Spanish), “what is chicken-fried steak?” The other man tried to explain it to him. I loved that everything was in Spanish except the word “gravy.”

    *   *   *   *   *   *    *   *   *

    There was an empty two-top next to the window, so I sat there and sipped my coffee and thought about MFK Fisher.

    When he kissed me on the forehead and said, “I’m so happy,” I knew it was because I was happy. And it made me happier.

    Dear Husband,

    Yesterday I told you that I cleaned up the HTML code on one of our websites, just because it was annoying me, and you told me I was so nerdy-hot. Thanks for appreciating that. You always seem to find the best way to look at things.

    Dear 30-Day What I Wore Challenge,

    Thank you for being so challenging. I’ve learned that I much prefer to be behind the camera than in front of it. Also that I should work on my posture. I’m sorry that you’ve become one of those projects that I start and don’t finish. If it makes you feel better, you share that label with yoga teacher training, personal chef training, knitting a blanket for my friend’s baby (I’m so sorry, Linds!), and keeping track of all the wines and cheeses we try. Maybe I’ll pick you up again someday.

    Dear Lovely Landlord,

    Thank you for sharing a bottle of wine with us, and for hanging out with us, and for buying us a lovely plant that I will no doubt kill in a very short amount of time, and for in general being the coolest, nicest landlord we’ve ever known. If it’s okay with you, we’ll probably live here forever.

    Dear Sushi,

    Thank you for being so tasty and fun to eat. I plan on introducing you to my parents-in-law this weekend at Uchiko, and I know you won’t disappoint. Who can resist your raw-ness, your rice-ness, your fresh-ness, and your beautiful simplicity? I know I can’t.

    Dear Rain,

    It would be really cool if you could hang out here for a while! We haven’t seen you in forever, and as I hear from farmers and gardeners and such, you’re kind of important. I’ll do a fun jig for you if you stop by. K thx.

    Dear Cameras,

    I know I’ve been neglecting you lately, partially because you’re so heavy to carry around, and partially because I just haven’t been feeling inspired. I just want you to know that I’m thinking of you, and I miss you, and I hope to pick you up again soon.

    Dear Austin,

    Thank you for this, and this, and this and this and this and this and this! You make me feel so proud. 🙂

  • Derby Day

    We had so much fun at the Tipsy Texan Derby Day Party! Lots of gals in great dresses and hats, and dandy-dressed guys, and mint juleps and hot browns and horse races. It’s one of my favorite days of the year. 🙂

  • Happy Mother’s Day!

    (To all the mamas out there, but especially to my mama, who sang this song to me when I was still in her tummy.)
