Things & Stuff

  • Moments #2

    Recent moments:

    I sipped my coffee and he talked about perfection. I said that we were so alike – if we can’t do it perfectly, we don’t want to do it at all. I was surprised to hear myself telling him that perfection is overrated, and that at the end of our lives, we would regret not trying more than we would regret trying and failing. I hope he tries – I would be his first customer.

    We sat and talked about work and friends, pancakes and yoga, grocery shopping and clothes. It was so easy, so normal. It’s so comforting to be with her.

    *   *   *   *   *   *    *   *   *

    He said, “Wait, I want Crystal to take a picture of the dessert before we cut into it.” I can’t explain why that felt so good.

    It sat in the mailbox, pink and promising, with a Korean return address. It was the brightest part of my day.

    *   *   *   *   *   *    *   *   *

    We ate at the cutting board, spooning sauce onto each bite, laughing at how messy we were. Afterward all I could taste was garlic.

    I stared at the bumper in front of me, tired and frustrated, and realized that I would only have to do this one more time. It was easier then to look up at the sky.

    Dear Husband,

    One time you talked in your sleep and said, “Mmmm, cake. Four. Four.” So tonight when I baked a cake, you said, “Mmmm, cake.” And I said, “Four. Four.” I love our inside jokes.

    Dear Garage Band Next Door,

    Thank you for finally turning down the volume on your microphone. We can still hear the bass, and I can still tell what songs your singing, but I no longer have to listen to the actual words, and for that I am grateful.

    Dear Snow Cones,

    It’s time! I plan to have you at least once a week for the next few months. I plan to continue my lifelong study on whether blue coconut tastes different from clear coconut. I also plan to make you at home with our handy dandy ice shaver and homemade syrups. Me + you = summer.

    Dear Full-Time Job,

    Thank you for teaching me so many things, and for introducing me to so many great people. I am glad to have had you, and yet I am excited to leave you. No hard feelings, okay?

    *Everybody! I’m leaving my full-time job to work from home. I’ll be freelance writing, copy editing, and working with Justin in his design business. Wish me luck! 🙂
