  • looking for fika

So ever since I started reading Sandra Juto’s blog, ages ago, I’ve been looking for fika. According to Wikipedia:

Fika is both a Swedish verb and noun that roughly means “to drink coffee,” usually accompanied by something sweet.

But it’s more than that. It’s usually social, with one’s family or friends or partner. It’s central to Swedish life, this interlude with coffee and pastry and chit chat. Sandra has lots of fika photos in her Flickr stream.

So I’ve been looking for a coffee shop or cafe here in Austin that will provide a great fika. My requirements:

    • Really good coffee
    • Really good pastries
    • Must be served on real dishware
    • Comfortable place with easygoing music and a cozy feel

It’s hard to find this place. We really love Sweetish Hill, because we can walk there, and they have good coffee and excellent pastries. But they’re served on plasticware and paper cups. Sadness.

Here’s what my dream would be: Sweetish Hill or La Boite pastries with Houndstooth or Caffe Medici coffee in a cafe that’s kind of like Les Deux Moulins (from Amelie). Anyone know of a place in Austin that fits the bill? Oh, and can it be within walking distance of my house? K thx. 🙂

Late lunch: I slept late, then just wasn’t hungry. I finally toasted a tortilla and stuffed some black forest ham in the middle.

Snack: Another guilty pleasure – chocolate covered donuts. Preferably the Hostess kind. 🙂

Dinner at Texican Sports Cantina: nachos supreme with beef. Texican is our comfort spot, where we eat snacks and watch lots of sports. And we always, always order the nachos.

As well as the tortilla soup. Not pictured: a Dos Equis with lime for me, and a Fireman’s #4 for Justin.

Late night: we met Rachel and Logan at Apothecary for a bit of wine and chit chat. Did you know they’re about to leave for over a year to travel around the world? I’m happysad. Happy for them, sad for me.

  • making tortillas

While we were in west Texas over the holidays, I filmed my sister making tortillas. She makes them so quickly and easily!

Here’s a short video of her rolling them out and cooking them on the comal (cast iron skillet). While she cooks, my mom and I chat about tortilla superstitions and rules. 🙂

Brunch: pancakes with syrup and bacon.

Snack: steamed cauliflower. I didn’t want to fill up right before our supper club, and I was chopping cauliflower, so I steamed a bit for a snack. Potatoes boiling in the background.

Supper Club: Antonellis’ cheese and antipasti plate.

    Suppli with marinara and mozzarella.

Suppli are mozzarella-stuffed fried risotto balls. Seriously good.

    Vintage bubbly.

    Ribollita with parmesan toasts.

Tuscan steak with arugula and marrow butter, Brussels sprouts with salt pork, white beans with garlic oil, and smashed potatoes with rosemary.

Dessert (not pictured): Vegan chocolate cupcake with raspberry filling.

More photos of supper club here.

Lunch: my super-comfort food, Chef Boyardee Beefaroni. What can I say? I keep a can in the cabinet for days like today.

Dinner: an open face toasted sandwich with ham, tomatoes, provolone and avocado; steamed broccoli; white grape soda (just some white grape juice mixed with plain Topo Chico.

He watched the rain while I ate.
