Lunch: the last of the leftover pizza.

Saturday was such a beautiful day! After Friday’s snow day, it was kind of weird to have a 65 degree day. We didn’t want to stay inside, so we packed up a few cameras, put on our walking shoes, and took off. We walked downtown, stopped whenever we needed snacks or drinks, checked out the exhibits at the Arthouse, watched unicycle football and puppies playing at the park, and had a wonderful, wonderful day. At the end of the night, we walked back home and watched Mad Men. I do love Mad Men.

I took my Zumi camera, and my iPhone, and made a little video of our all-day stroll. Justin carried the digital and took a few shots (mostly of me). He made me put those shots in the video because he says it’s only fair that I be in there, too. πŸ™‚ So I have no photos of what I ate for the day, but I did capture it all on video.

    We ate:

    • Sweetish Hill: a mini-chocolate cupcake and a chocolate covered strawberry
    • The Ginger Man: we shared a burned pretzel with mustard (which we didn’t eat much of, because burned is bad)
    • Lamberts: wild boar ribs with sriracha glaze and blue cheese sauce
    • Imperia: nigiri (eel, salmon, yellowtail, escolar, and tuna) and spicy edamame
    • Parkside: raw oysters
    • 24 Diner: chili-cheese fries and cappuccinos

Hope you’re all having a fabulous weekend!

  • Friday (Snow Day!)

    Lunch: leftover pizza.

Snack: the last two Oreos. Time to go grocery shopping.

Dinner with Bryan and Jason at Cafe Express: some kind of chicken alfredo pasta dish. I thought it was pretty good, though probably very fatty. Bryan and Jason gave it two (sideways) thumbs up.

Dessert: mini-Reese’s peanut butter cup Blizzard from Dairy Queen. Jason is a HUGE fan of Dairy Queen, so Bryan took us there after dinner for Blizzards. They have these mini sizes now, which is good, because I usually just pick out the candy and leave most of the ice cream, and now I won’t waste so much. πŸ™‚

Also, we had Bryan’s 7-week old son Anderson with us, but I didn’t take any pictures because he was fast asleep in the covered carrier all night. I did risk waking him up at the end of the evening, though, when I had no choice but to smother him in kisses. He’s so cute.

    And also, it snowed!

Probably about an inch. This is nothing to most of you, who actually get a real winter every year, but we never (NEVER) get snow in Austin. Actually, I think last year we had flurries for about 4 1/2 minutes one afternoon, but that’s about it. So since the roads were icy, and we Austinites are horrible at driving in any kind of inclement weather, there were a lot of road closures, and more importantly, my office was closed! So I had the day off, which I spent making final book edits, napping, and reading. It was quite lovely.

Hope you’re all keeping warm out there – we’re supposed to be back up to 59 degrees tomorrow.

  • Thursday

Breakfast: potato and cheese taco. I picked all the cheese off. My friend M. brought this for me – he’s really sweet.

Lunch at Clay Pit with Lindsay: buffet stuff (potatoes and peppers, coconut veggies, rice, dal, naan). The yellow lentil dal was so delicious. Aside from the food being great, it was wonderful to hang out with my friend.

Dinner: Pizza Hut! Justin has been craving Pizza Hut for weeks now, and I never let him have it. Today seemed like a good Pizza Hut day. I had half cheese, half sausage-mushroom. Justin had pineapple-jalapeΓ±o and Buffalo wings. We have a TON of pizza leftover.

I’m still trying to get used to this cold weather. We live in a very small place, but we only have one space heater, so it gets chilly at night. We turn the oven on when we’re in the living room, and we threw extra blankets on the bed. I’ve been falling asleep hugging the heating pad, and then Justin turns it off when he comes to bed. It’s not worth getting another heater – it’s supposed to be back in the 60s by Sunday. Crazy Texas weather.

  • Wednesday

Breakfast: cinnamon roll and vanilla bean tea. One of my coworkers picked up cinnamon rolls, then warmed them up in our work oven for everyone, just because. Isn’t that nice?

Lunch: caldo and crispy taco at Joe’s. Again. My friend A. had never been there, so of course I had to introduce her to my favorite caldo in town.

Dinner at Foreign & Domestic with Rachel: these are parmesan gougeres. At first I was sad that the popovers aren’t on the menu anymore, but these are crazygood. (At this point I would like to say that we only ordered five dishes and two desserts between the three of us, but Ned is such a gracious chef, and works with Justin a lot, and so just kept on sending out stuff. We did not complain.) πŸ™‚

Chicory and celery with pickled beets, boquerones (white anchovies), oranges and mint.

Smoked rainbow trout with confit potatoes, bitter greens, and mustard.

Venison heart crudo with egg yolk, pickled mushrooms, white chocolate, and crispy pig ear.

Pork liver terrine, with citrus jam, dates, relish and tarragon mustard.

Lacquered Texas quail, potato puree, caramelized celery and hazelnut pesto.

Parsnip ravioli in fennel broth, with garlic confit, Brussels sprouts, braised grapes and crispy pig ears.

Monterey Bay whole herring, carrot butter, pickled olives, bacon foam.

Left: rice pudding with bananas, caramel and blood orange sorbet.

Right: chocolate mousse with milk chocolate ganache, hazelnuts, and hazelnut ice cream.

Fried apple pie with toffee ice cream.

After dinner, we stopped at the Tigress Pub for drinks. Justin had Pam’s Irish coffee. In the foreground is a barrel-aged vieux carre.

My favorite things: white anchovies in my salad, parmesan gougeres, potato puree, caramelized celery, whole herring, fennel broth, parsnip ravioli, chocolate mousse, toffee ice cream, spending time with Rachel and Justin, and chatting with Pam.

Quite a gluttonous day. And we got home so late that I couldn’t stay awake to upload all these photos. Still, better late than never, right? πŸ™‚

  • Tuesday

Breakfast: Golden Grahams with soy milk.

Lunch: quesadilla and hot cocoa with marshmallows.

    Snack: toasted marshmallow.

Dinner: plain angel hair pasta with butter and salt.

    Dessert: Oreos.

Lots of plain food comfort food today. I woke up this morning and felt like I had been run over by a steamroller. I was achy and slightly feverish, so I stayed home and tried to sleep it off. I went out for an appointment, then came straight back to bed. I’m feeling a bit better now – I have no idea what it was, though Justin thinks I was just too tense yesterday, stressing about things and working on book revisions. He’s probably right.

It’s also very cold today – after a weekend of 78 degree days, it’s hard to have a windy, 32 degree day. Then again, my Boston friends are getting buried in snow right now, so I can’t really complain.
