Things & Stuff

  • Happy Blogiversary!

Today marks poco-cocoa’s first birthday. It’s hard to believe a year has passed already! I spent the morning going through all my old posts, and it’s amazing to me:
    **how much I’ve changed,
**how fast my hair has grown,
**how many recipes I’ve forgotten about, even though they were SO GOOD, and
**how wonderful the past year has been.

Thank you all so very much for being a part of this blog. I looked at my site stats today, and though I really don’t understand them very well, it seems that I have a lot of people stopping by each day (more than I can account for with family and friends, that is). It makes me happy to know that I may have inspired someone to try a new recipe, or maybe a new craft, or maybe to start a blog of their own. I am just thrilled each time I get a comment…every single one. I have enjoyed getting to know my camera better, and working on my writing skills. I’ve made new friends, “met” people from around the globe, and have become aware of so many talented and creative people out there. I’ve learned so much just from having this blog!

So as a blogiversary gift, I give you a photo of Roux, demonstrating our mutual enjoyment of the food section of the newspaper. Also, this:

    61. My nervous habit is twitching my nose, then closing my throat. It’s hard to explain.
    62. I love going to the movies, but I don’t go that often.
    63. Sometimes I spend the majority of my day on the computer, reading your blogs.

    77. I’m working on allowing myself to get more B’s and C’s in life. I’m liking it.
    78. I’m a sucker for scented products…hand soap, lotion, candles, body wash, shampoo…
    79. I still have lotion in my drawer that I used during my internship…7 years ago. Yuck!
    80. I just threw that lotion away.
    81. I’ll probably go to Bath Junkie today to buy some more, even though I have 3 other half-used bottles.

    98. I am proud of the person I have become.
    99. Aside from this blog, I keep a computer journal, a sketchbook, an illustrated inspiration journal, a gratitude journal, a book journal, a daily dialogue journal, and a poetry journal. I think that’s it.
    100. My nose is pierced.

  • For girls only

Here’s another crafty thing I did a while back. I decided that I needed a little pouch for carrying tampons in my purse. I tend to just drop them in, which can result in an unpleasant surprise later when I’m paying my bill or grabbing my keys. Pulling this out of my purse is much more fun, and I don’t mind if everyone sees it!

Next time I’ll make the flap a bit longer, as the ribbon just barely catches it closed. (This is the ribbon I received with my package from Kickpleat!)

Hey, if I have to deal with the utter misery of my period, I at least want it to have some cuteness.

In other news, my Saturday at Moxie/Plume was wonderful. It’s such a fun shop, with so many different designers. It’s hard not to just wander around the store, touching fabrics or examining jewelry. I tried on a wonderful dress that just arrived at Plume, but it was a bit to big for me…which is unfortunate, because it really is an amazing dress. Anyway, I organized Moxie’s email situation, and I’ve started organizing the back room. It was fun to watch all the customers streaming in, going ga-ga over the handmade items. I felt so proud to be a part of it all…this is hand-made. This is creativity. This is real.

Last night we joined Chad, Lindsay, Rob, and Shara for an Oscar party. Lindsay went all out (as usual), decorating the place with streamers and red carpet, and handing us each a feathery tiara (for the girls) and sequined bow-ties (for the guys) as we walked in. We snacked on cilantro hummus, farmer’s cheese, three seed bread, mini spanikopitas, artichoke-goat cheese dip, cinnamon toasted pecans, olives, and cranberry-walnut goat cheese rounds. It was so much fun!

It’s lunchtime here, then I’m off for another afternoon at Moxie/Plume. Happy Monday!

So…I got the job! I’ll be starting tomorrow afternoon at Moxie & the Compound and Plume. It’s the cutest little boutique, with lots of hand-made stuff, and the owners are super-cool. I’m excited to get in there and start organizing things, and be familiar with all the designers and their wares. It may be a long day, up early at the B&B, then the afternoon at the shop, but the two are so different that I don’t think it will bother me. How amazing is this…two fun and laid-back jobs, with two of my favorite things…food and crafts. I’ll let you all know how it goes.

Speaking of crafts, here’s a glimpse at the tablecloth that I made for our kitchen. I used an extra fitted sheet that I cut into a circle and hemmed, then I embroidered my favorite poem around the edge:

    This Is Just to Say

    I have eaten
    the plums
    that were in
    the icebox

    and which
    you were probably
    saving
    for breakfast

    Forgive me
    they were delicious
    so sweet
    and so cold

    by William Carlos Williams

I love it…and it has opened up the possibility of creating other tablecloths, with embroidery, or quilting, or silk-screening. We have a glass piece that fits over the cloth, so it would be protected from spills and the like.

So happy Friday, everyone, and have a wonderful weekend!

  • For the love of garlic

I put garlic in everything. One of my favorite things about cooking is that smell that stays on your fingertips after you’ve chopped garlic. So it was natural for me to want to try this dish…it’s a garlic-butter sauce! It has to be good!

The original recipe was for chicken, but since I hate cooking meat, I decided to try it with tofu. Tofu, hot off the pan, sprinkled with a little kosher salt and pepper…what could be better than that? Drizzling it with butter and garlic, that’s what.

I also whipped up some black beans as a side dish. Although I love the taste of made-from-scratch beans, sometimes I opt for the convenience of canned. I like to jazz them up a bit, though, adding herbs or chiles, and always a squeeze of lime.

    Tofu con Mojo de Ajo

    • 1 tablespoon olive oil
    • 1 (12 ounce) package extra-firm tofu, drained, blotted dry, and cut into four slabs (cut in half like a layer cake, then in half again)
    • 1/4 teaspoon salt
    • 1/4 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
    • 1 tablespoon butter
    • 4 garlic cloves, thinly sliced
    • 3/4 cup vegetable broth
    • Juice of 1 1/2 limes
    • 2 tablespoons minced fresh cilantro

Heat oil in a large pan over medium heat. Sprinkle tofu with salt and pepper, and place in the pan. Cook until browned, about 4 to 5 minutes, then flip and cook until browned on the other side, about 4 to 5 minutes more. Remove tofu from pan; keep warm.

Melt butter in pan over medium-low heat. Add garlic; cook 1 minute (do not brown). Add broth; bring to a boil, scraping pan to loosen browned bits. Cook until mixture is reduced to about 1/2 cup (about 4 minutes). Remove from heat; stir in lime juice and cilantro. Serve sauce over tofu.

    Makes 2 servings.

    Weeknight Black Beans

    1 can black beans, undrained
    1 clove garlic, minced
    1 jalapeno, minced
    1 tablespoon minced cilantro
    Juice of 1/2 lime

Heat beans with their liquid, garlic, and jalapeno in a small saucepan over medium heat. Simmer for 5 to 10 minutes; stir in cilantro and lime.

    Makes 2 servings.

  • More of the same…

Those darn food ruts. I have weeks of creativity, with lots of ingredients and preparation techniques, and then there are weeks like these, when it’s cereal or nothing. Actually, I’ve been eating more than just cereal, but I haven’t been very creative in the kitchen.

Our lovely farmer brought us lots of lettuce this week. I like salads, but I have to be in the mood for them. And I haven’t been in the mood. So we decided to use up some of the lettuce by making lettuce wraps. I used the cabbage slaw and honey-glazed tofu recipes that I’ve made before, and just rolled it all up in a lettuce leaf. It was so refreshing! We didn’t even need a dipping sauce, since the slaw was drenched in peanut dressing.

I’ve been in a rut craft-wise, as well. I have all this fabric, all this paper, and all these ideas, but I haven’t put much of it to use. Actually, I made an apron for a friend, but I’m waiting to post it until she sees it. I’m also working on something really cool for another friend, a very, very belated birthday gift, which is basically done except for the packaging. And since I’m a sucker for gorgeous packaging, it’s taking forever because I have to coordinate a time when my loving, talented, design-centric husband and I can work together on it.

So there’s a lot of waiting. But thing I’m waiting anxiously on now is a possible job opportunity with a wonderful little boutique that sells hand-crafted items, from both local and national designers. I’d be helping out with inventory, making the shop look good, organizing the back room, and all that good stuff. You guys know how organized I am…I have fun at the B&B when it’s time to re-organize the laundry room. I’m hoping it will work out…I’d love to hang out in a place like that, meet the designers, help bring hand-made stuff to the world, or at least to Austin.

As another bonus, the owners have encouraged me to bring in things to sell. I wore my hand-made skirt when I talked to one of the owners, and she couldn’t believe I wasn’t selling my creations. It’s a gorgeous creative opportunity.

So, internets, I’m off to turn on the air conditioner (it’s 82 degrees today!) and sift through my crafty wares to see if anything inspiring comes up. Wish me luck!
