Things & Stuff

Evidently I like photographing my shoes on the dashboard. Maybe because I’m slightly obsessed with shoes?

Especially these – now that I’m not in an office-business-dress environment daily, I can wear more casual stuff, which I love. These are my new Simple shoes…

    And my lovely Bensimons.

Of course, I still want these. And these. And these. So there’s that.

I saw the greatest bumper sticker a few days ago: 4 OUT OF 3 PEOPLE HAVE TROUBLE WITH FRACTIONS

We’re on an apéritif kick: Lillet Blanc, Cocchi Americano, Cardamaro, Perucchi, Vergano Americano… one of these with a bit of soda is the perfect end-of-summer drink.

I just finished Beaneaters & Bread Soup. It is officially my second-favorite book. My absolute favorite is The Kitchen Diaries. There is a theme here.

Justin’s birthday is tomorrow. All he wants for his birthday is a new pair of running shoes. He asks for so little.

I’ve started writing poetry again. If you’re lucky, you’ll never have to see it on this blog, ha ha.

I’ve been thinking a lot about “enjoying the process.” I realized that while I have grown tired of lugging my camera(s) around, I really enjoy editing and posting photos. So I want to figure out a way to enjoy the process of taking photos, as a source of re-inspiration. I keep thinking I want to carry my film camera around, but it’s so hard not to get that instant gratification of digital photos. Perhaps that’s what I need, though… a longer process to enjoy.

It’s New York Fashion Week. If you need me, you will likely find me glued to my computer screen, drooling over the shows and Jamie’s cinemagraphs.

    Have a great weekend, everyone!

  • Wednesday

Today I woke up to smoke. All of Austin was under a haze of smoke from the wildfires in nearby Bastrop. It’s a veil, hanging everywhere. It’s hard to believe that so much fire has devastated so many homes and lives, and it’s still raging, so close by.

I got a haircut, then stopped at East Village Cafe for an iced coffee. I met a friend at Fino for drinks and chatting. Justin joined me there afterward for dinner, and now I’m home, and a little weirded out about natural disasters and scary politics and economics. Some days I become overwhelmed by the little things… today I am overwhelmed by the big things.

I feel the need to be grateful. And so, I am grateful for:

    • A safe home
    • A loving husband
    • Lovely kitty cats
    • Friends and family
    • Semi-sweet chocolate
    • Crossword puzzles
    • Cooler weather
    • Books
    • Memory foam mattresses
    • Peanut butter
    • Inspiration

Gratitude always makes me feel better.

  • Noble Pig

We had lunch at Noble Pig a few days ago. Have you been there yet? It’s way the heck up north, but the sandwiches are so freakin’ good that it’s worth the drive. We stopped in on our way to IKEA, which worked perfectly.

This is Justin giving me The Look… maybe he’s tired of being Justin in the corner? 🙂

We think the best option is to order half-sandwiches – then you can try twice as many! Below: Sandwich special (duck pate and bacon – the pate was insane), BLT (mmm, pork belly), pickles and jalapeño slaw (we could maybe live off the jalapeño slaw.)

And: a jar of spicy pickles (we had to take some home), potato salad (deliciously olive-y), the Noble Pig (spicy ham, pulled pork, provolone, bacon) and the Seared Beef Tongue (I never knew as a child that I would come to love things like beef tongue).

    Yum yum yum.

    2. Lunch: Amy’s vegan burrito, Italian mix giardineira, an aprium, and Dumbo Feather.

    3. Snack: Marshmallow coated in toasted coconut.

    4. Dinner: Pizza made with pita bread, creme fraiche, leftover mushrooms/zucchini, roasted green chiles, and cheese, plus salad with balsamic vinaigrette and rosé.

    5. Spent part of the afternoon at Caffe Medici, drinking iced coffee and reading Forever Odd.

    6. New shoes!

    7. Roux spent the day napping.

    8. Goodies from the library. People, please note the book on the top: The Land of Painted Caves by Jean Auel. I have been waiting for this book for nine years. Literally, NINE YEARS, people! Book 5 in the series came out in 2002, and ever since then, I’ve been anxiously awaiting the conclusion. It’s here, it’s here!

    9. Goodies from the used bookstore. Lots of lovely books to cut up for journaling. (Sorry, N., I know how much you hate cutting up books.) 😉

So all these photos were taken with my iPhone. I have to say, I think I’ll have to carry my dSLR again. 🙂
