    Breakfast at Galaxy Cafe.

Right now I have a whiskey-soaked dark chocolate bundt cake in the oven. It smells like heaven. Justin will be sad to learn that we are not cutting into it until tomorrow night, when the flavors have melded, and we have delivered it to Chad and Lindsay’s for dessert hour. I can’t wait.

The other fabulous thing about this is that I’m baking! It’s actually cool enough outside to bake without risking heat stroke.

I have found a new obsession: River Cottage. I found it through Keri’s blog, and was able to purchase the first season through Amazon. This is officially my favorite show ever. Hugh is hilarious and real, his neighbors are wonderful, his little cottage is lovely, and watching him find things to fill his larder (fishing, hunting, picking) is too much fun. I’m ready for season two!

I’ve been slowly reorganizing the categories on poco-cocoa, trying to whittle them down to a manageable ten or so. I’d rather use tags to divide them up in to even smaller groups, and have larger categories. But after working for hours on it, I still have 5 1/2 years worth of blog to go through, so I’m losing steam. Does anyone really use categories and tags anyway? 🙂

The film festival starts on Thursday! I can’t wait. This year instead of watching a bajillion trailers ahead of time to choose my movies, I think I will just check the schedule each day and go wherever sounds best. Of course I already have too many movies marked for Day 1, so maybe that method won’t work any better after all.

Last Friday, Justin and I went to the Volstead to attend the launch of Casa Brasil’s bike delivery program. It turned out to be so much fun – there were tons of bikers (commuters, racers, etc.) there, and at the end of the night, the Del Vipers played their fabulous surfer rock and I danced the night away.

  • Thrift Store Finds

Yesterday I scored big at the thrift store.

Look at this clock! It’s so freakin’ cool.

All the doodads in it still work, too. I got it for Justin so he can time his espresso pulls.

I have a special place in my heart for little enamel bowls. These are tiny and cute.

I found this little salt shaker and fell in love with it. I have no idea why. It’s an odd shape, it’s faded, the cork is lost in the shaker, and it doesn’t have a pepper pair, but for some reason I just love it so much.

This book is so horribly awesome, I had to have it.

It was written in 1973. Along with recommending the mindboggling practice of storing ice in bags in the freezer, it reminds women to “Remember that your husband is the head of the house.” It’s so horrible. I love it. I think I’ll have to share more of this little book with you in the future.

This is a World Book Encyclopedia sales book. It has an example of the cover in the back.

And a sort of “Best Of” set of pages inside, showing all the wonderful things that World Book Encyclopedia can teach you!

I think I’ll end up taking this apart and scanning in things, and cutting up things, and making things out of things.

    I love thrifting.

Found this lovely video by David Luepschen on swissmiss. I love to think of all the mysterious little creatures out in the forests of the world. 🙂

  • Monday

A few things on my to-do list: read my friend Steve’s article in Best Food Writing 2011 (!!!); write to pen pals; figure out schedule for Austin Film Festival.

Had lunch with lovely friends at Buenos Aires Cafe. I have no idea how they make beef tenderloin so darn tender.

Bela visits us every day now. He and Roux are friends through the screen.

    Spent the evening at Contigo.

Erin and Justin spent a lot of time picking the perfect mescal.

Erin was impeccably dressed, as always.

I chose the Old-Fashioned as my drink for the evening.

We had olives, pigs-in-blankets, white bean dip, ox tongue sliders, crispy green beans, blueberry shortcake, and a smore (with sweetened lardo instead of marshmallow creme).

If every Monday was like this, Mondays would rock.

I’m testing out larger photos. I like ’em. This one was taken on film with my Yashica – I love the scratches.

I’m ready for a blog re-design. I’m going to try to lasso my lovely husband into doing it for me. 🙂

If you go to Wheatsville Co-op any time soon, buy a vegan oatmeal cream pie and a tub of their nut paté. You won’t be sorry.

Last Friday I stopped at the drug store to pick up a prescription and also bought a ginormous Pixy Stix. The cashier said, “Wow, you’re really making a statement with that. You’re saying, IT’S FRIDAY AND I WANT MY PIXY STIX!” I have no idea why that was so hilariously funny, but it was, and every time I take a hit (because seriously, it’s a hit of pure sugar, and one ginormous stick will last for days and days), I giggle.

I have found such lovely reading material lately. My favorites:

    • Frankie Magazine – I want to get a subscription, but it’s so expensive because it comes from Australia. Still, I should do it.
    • Remedy Quarterly – I adore this little magazine. I read it cover to cover and anxiously await the next issue.
    • Lucky Peach – It took me a while to read this magazine, because I savored every bit. Again, I should get a subscription.
    • The Book of Lost Things – I am halfway through this and find myself putting off reading it because it’s so freakin good, and so fun, and so scary, and so awesome, that I don’t want it to end.

I have a hair appointment tomorrow, and of course I’m thinking of growing out my hair somehow. I like the one-side-longer-than-the-other thing, but there’s something about fall and winter that makes me want to longer hair. We’ll see what Joey says.

Hope you’re all having a lovely week!
