Things & Stuff

  • Tuesday

Some days I wake up and just getting out of bed is a difficult task.

Some days I wake up and take on the world (of food). Today was one of those days.

I got up before Justin, fed the kitties, washed the dishes, and made coffee.

I worked on the book, sent emails, did research.

I prepped our produce for the week – baked spaghetti squash, baked sweet potatoes, roasted carrots and garlic, and sauteed kale.

I made a brunch of toasted baguette smeared with herbed chevre, topped with sauteed kale stems and a fried egg. Scrumptious.

I had a snack of Ryvita crackers smeared with more chevre and topped with thinly sliced cucumbers. Unfortunately, I decided that Ryvita crackers taste and feel a lot like cardboard (The corrugated kind. Though I’ve never tasted cardboard per se).

I tried to top off my snack with a sweet bite, a little ice cream sandwich. But I think it had been in the freezer too long, because it tasted like freezer instead of chocolate.

I interviewed an awesome chef, fought traffic, worked some more, and prepped meatballs for dinner (ground beef, parsley, feta, egg, panko, salt and pepper).

Dinner was spaghetti squash with meatballs and marinara sprinkled with Parmesan, plus toasted baguette.

I embroidered a gift for a friend. I walked to the grocery store to get a few things.

I baked cookies for Girls Night tomorrow.

Today I have earned my keep. 🙂

  • Food lately

Soy latte from Medici and clean-the-fridge-out fried rice. I heated up some ghee and oil, sauteed some garlic and onion, added some bits of turkey and leftover cumin rice, fried it all up, then drizzled with shoyu and added in a couple of beaten farm eggs. This was seriously good.

I went to the grocery store and bought lots of goodies, so supper ended up being a fill-the-fridge smorgasbord. We didn’t even stop to put the produce away – we just pushed it aside and ate whole wheat baguette, Noble Pig spicy pickles, regular dill pickles, Kala’s chutney, Confituras salted caramel pear butter, Pure Luck feta, Pure Luck herbed chevre, colby-jack, a bowl of Texas Olive Ranch roasted garlic oil for dipping, and pink bubbly. It was one of the best meals ever! I love that so much of our food can be sourced so close to home.

I also think that later tonight we’ll have a dessert of nutella and salted caramel pear butter smores a la Oh Joy!

Hope you all had a great weekend!

  • Curry, part 2

I had just a bit of peas-and-cheese curry left, plus some raita, so I decided to whip up a quick frittata. Just beaten eggs, a pinch of salt, and the warmed leftover curry, cooked in a pan with ghee. Lovely. 🙂

  • Speaking of golden…

My golden best friend, Lindsay, sent me roses out of the blue today. This delivery has made my week! Thank you, love!

  • Good things

An unexpected job perk: backyard eggs!

Yesterday I visited with Chef Wolfgang Murber at Fabi + Rosi, and I got to meet his cute chickens out back. His wife Cassie sent me home with these three little beauties. I love the tiny one!

I found this prayer somewhere and have adopted it:

May all beings everywhere be happy and free, and may the thoughts, words, and actions of my own life today contribute in some way to that happiness and to that freedom for all.

This morning I went for a walk around the neighborhood with my golden friend K., then we sat at Caffe Medici and chatted over lattes and tea. I think we feed each other’s creativity – my head is so full of ideas and plans and projects and dreams, I can’t even begin to describe it! I never realized the importance of surrounding yourself with those golden people who bring out the best in you – positivity, creativity, generosity, hope, love. There is so much negativity and criticism and gossip and unhappiness in the world –  I need all the gold around me I can get! So to all you golden people (you know who you are) – thank you.

    Happy Thursday, everyone!
