  • Thanksgiving Friends

This is going to be a ginormous post full of people you don’t know, but I want to share these photos of the wonderful people who made my Thanksgiving great!

    Justin photobombed Logan.

    Jody and Logan toasted oysters.

Rachel and Brandon – Brandon’s an architect and such a witty guy.

I got so many beautiful photos of Rachel!

GQ really loved his whiskey gift – Beth and Brandon are slightly amused. GQ and Beth are the most gracious hosts EVER.

    Jody seriously loved the pies.

Tori shucked oysters all night – two for the tray, one for her.

It was Rachel’s job to make sure the turkey’s skin was totally dry. This led to many innuendos.

    EXTREME CLOSE UP!

After many trials and tribulations with Beth’s oven, Logan still managed to roast an amazing turkey.

    Another great Rachel photo.

It’s me! I guess I was mad at being photographed.

Tori and Justin sipping cafe au lait at Morning Call.

The girls awaiting a decision from the boys.

Thank you, friends, for making Thanksgiving so wonderful!♥

  • Groceries

This week I finally got my stuff together and pulled off an amazing feat of cookery. I know I’ve mentioned An Everlasting Meal before, but I still love it and read it over and over. I love the idea of going to the market, coming home and cooking everything up, then having easy-to-use veggies ready to go all week. I’ve been inspired by my friend Kate, who does this most weeks and pretty much rocks in the kitchen.

So on Sunday I went to the farmers’ market and grocery store and loaded up on goodies. This was not all I bought, but it was a good chunk of it. (Click the photos to embiggen.)

I roasted butternut squash and turnips. Beets and broccoli and cauliflower. Little sweet potatoes and whole garlic cloves.

I washed and sauteed swiss chard and the green tops of the turnips, beets, and kohlrabi.

I toasted some walnuts and made a pesto out of the broccoli stems, cauliflower cores, and stems from the greens.

And now I have the makings of delicious meals for the week! Today I had a beet and green sandwich, smeared with mushroom pate and pesto. I snacked on a sweet potato drizzled with soy milk and sprinkled with sugar. I had a room-temperature veggie mix for lunch. And the week isn’t even halfway through! I’m really hoping I can keep this up most weekends, because it ROCKS.

*If you’re wondering where Justin fits into all this, he is on a 10-day juice cleanse, so I’m on my own for food. Funny that I choose all healthy stuff! And yes, he’s crazy.

  • Louisiana.

I wish I could edit every photo I took in Louisiana and post it here. Alas, that thought gives me hives, so you’ll have to just enjoy these few from my iPhone for the moment.

We spent Thanksgiving week in Louisiana with the Coops, with a couple of days in New Orleans. It was fantastic, and tiring, and wonderful, and exhausting, and delicious, and fattening. In other words, I loved it.

Above is a photo of Brandon grilling oysters. Once they’re grilled, they’re topped with Parmesan cheese. Ooooh, yeah.

We stopped in Sulphur for some amazing boudin, shrimp burger, and stuffed jalapeños.

And when we arrived in Mandeville, Logan’s parents had an amazing southern feast ready for us: smoked ham, macaroni and cheese, cornbread, and peas.

There was a hammock in the back yard. Enough said.

Wednesday was Oyster Thanksgiving. This consisted of 300 raw oysters that were shucked all night, slurped up raw, grilled, baked Rockefeller, and eaten. Fantastic.

Logan’s mom is the cutest. Our Thanksgiving table was decorated with super-cute little animals. I had a fox. I wanted to bring him home.

Our time in New Orleans started with amazing beignets and cafe au lait at Morning Call. ZOMG this coffee, these beignets. My favorites.

Not long after that, we feasted on po’ boys at Parkway. Deeee-licious.

We walked down to the Quarter to have sazeracs and Pimms cups at Napoleon House.

After a late night of dinner and dancing, I was miraculously the only person awake early in the morning. So I took a walk in the Marigny and had a bit of coffee and biscotti.

And I was visited by urban wild chickens! Who knew?

We had lunch at Drago’s – ooooh, the grilled oysters were swimming in butter, perfect for sopping up with that crusty French bread.

I left the table to go to the bathroom, and when I returned, everyone yelled, “Happy Birthday!” It was not my birthday, but I enjoyed the brownie sundae nonetheless.

We had fun in this crazy spaceship thing that washed ashore after the hurricane. The boys were posing as explorers in the orange sunset (except for Jody, who was posing as a prairie dog).

On the drive home, we stopped in Lafayette to try Cochon’s outpost there. It was huge and impersonal, but the food was good.

    Louisiana, I love you!♥

  • Life and such

So we took the cats to the vet yesterday for their yearly check-ups. Ohmyga. Our cats HATE going to the vet. They hate their carriers. They hate car rides. So it took twenty minutes to corral them into their carriers, kicking and screaming and hissing and clawing. Then came the car ride with them MEOWing constantly. This time we dropped them off at the clinic and picked them up later in the day, and I have to say, I think this was better than being there with them during the appointment. The vet said that Roux was “great” during his visit. He laid on his back and let them check everything. WHAT?! MY Roux did that? Life is full of surprises.

Anyway, both kitties are healthy, but Roux is… well… he has to lose some weight. He’s a large cat anyway, so his ideal weight is 15 pounds. He’s at 17.6. So now he has this special diet food, which he happens to LOVE, so that’s good. Unfortunately, Little is still scared that we might box her up and take her to the vet, so she’s been hiding a lot. Ah, kitties.

So it turns out that Cipollina serves this amazing butter lettuce salad with anchovies and grilled radicchio. It’s my new favorite thing.

Also, I figured out why I love Houndstooth so much. First, they have amazing coffee. Second, when I walk in, Paul says, “Hey Crystal!” Third, it’s bright and airy. Fourth, they don’t cook stuff there, so it doesn’t smell like stuffy grilled ickiness. Fifth, they don’t play loud obnoxious music. If you’re guessing that I had a bad experience at a coffee shop recently, and am therefore grateful for Houndstooth, you would be guessing correctly.

On election night, our friends were having parties and watching the polls. I could not do this, because it makes me extremely anxious.

So I read books and waited it out, until finally it was announced that Barack Obama would still be my president, and I could breathe a sigh of relief. And then I made celebratory cocktails for us – on the left is the Commander in Chief, and on the right is El Presidente. 🙂

Today we met my family in Fredericksburg for strolling and such. My sister, most generous, loving, wonderful soul that she is, is lending us a car until we can sell the scooters and figure out our next steps. I have a wonderful family. Anyway, there’s a bakery on main street that sells SWEET GERMAN PRETZELS. That is all.

We also visited Justin’s parents today, and they have a butterfly haven in their backyard. This little guy was just one of many.

In other news, I decided recently that four jobs is at least one job too many. So I’m cutting down and refocusing, and I think things will be better. I feel like I can focus more and accomplish more, while still having some free time. So that’s good.

For those of you reading this on Monday, Happy Veterans Day! I can’t begin to describe how thankful I am that others have risked their life for my freedoms.

I hope you all have a great week!♥

  • Eating and eating

Rachel and I decided to lunch at Elizabeth Street Cafe last week. This place is so freakin’ photogenic. And delicious. 🙂

Above is the octopus salad with kohlrabi. Apparently, I love kohlrabi.

Below are a couple of punches that we tried. The schnozberies taste like schnozberies!

I had my favorite, the grilled chicken thigh bun with egg roll. Zomg yum.

Rachel had the special banh mi, with every kind of meatstuffs you could want.

We both had Vietnamese iced coffees. Rachel introduced me to these, and now they’re my favorite things.

Raise your hand if you love sweetened condensed milk! (My hand is raised.)♥
