  • Sno Cone Club!

Every other Sunday or so, every summer (as of last summer), the Sno Cone Club meets at Casey’s New Orleans Snowballs for sno cones and chit chat. This was the first time we attended, and the first time we had Casey’s sno cones.

After eyeing other people’s choices (such as strawberry cheesecake and root beer, below), Justin and I ordered our sweets.

Sno cones are taken very seriously at Casey’s. I chose the Mounds bar, made with chocolate and coconut. The (housemade) chocolate syrup is poured in slowly, in two rounds, to fully soak in.

Then the coconut syrup is added.

Justin chose TWO sno cones (it’s so fun to be an adult, and be able to have two sno cones if you want). One was chocolate covered cherry, made like the Mounds one above, but with cherry instead of coconut. The other was mango, with a chile-lime-salt topping. First, the mango syrup:

Then a hefty sprinkle of chile-lime-salt powder.

All three were super-delicious, though I was still pining for a pickle juice sno cone. I’ll have to hunt one down elsewhere.

Ah, yes, summer is definitely here.

  • June Tunes

Ah, summer. It’s here with a vengeance in Austin, and so this month’s tunes are a bit summery, I think. Click on “my tunes” over on the right to have a listen! (Or you can click here.) I gotta say, I’m especially adoring #6 and #13 right now. And I”m especially loving the cover of #13 in the video below. 🙂

  • My lipstick habit.

So I have a problem. I buy too many lip products. Lip glosses, sheens, pencils, sticks, you name it. Every time I see a Burt’s Bees display, or I pass by the makeup section of Target, I buy something (I don’t buy any expensive stuff, so maybe that makes it better?) Here’s an example of what I found in my makeup drawer recently:

What’s even worse is that I have somehow purchased 84 bajillion lipsticks IN THE EXACT SAME COLOR. Behold:

    I need help.

  • Blackberry Cobbler

Oh, summer fruit, you make me so happy. Our last Farmhouse bin contained a basket of blackberries and some peaches. I used them in this cobbler… and now I am determined to make cobblers ALL THE TIME, using this recipe. We loved the biscuit-y topping, and I imagine just about any fruit would be great in it.

I halved the recipe from here… below are the amounts I used.

    Blackberry Peach Cobbler

    • 1 tablespoon cornstarch
    • 3/4 cup plus 1 teaspoon sugar
    • 2 1/2 cups blackberries
    • 3 medium peaches, peeled, pited and cut into wedges
    • 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
    • 1 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
    • 1/2 teaspoon salt
    • 1 stick cold unsalted butter, cut into small cubes
    • 1/2 cup plus 1 1/2 tablespoons milk

Preheat oven to 425F. Spray a pie dish (9-inch would work well) with cooking spray.

Whisk together cornstarch and 3/4 cup sugar in a large bowl, then add blackberries and peaches and toss to combine well. Transfer to baking dish and bake just until bubbling, 10 to 15 minutes.

While fruit bakes, whisk together flour, baking powder, and salt in another large bowl, then blend in butter with a pastry blender until mixture resembles coarse meal. Add milk and stir just until a dough forms.

Drop dough onto hot fruit mixture in mounds, then sprinkle dough with remaining teaspoon of sugar. Bake cobbler until top is golden, 20 – 25 minutes. Serve warm.

    Makes 4 – 6 servings.

  • Lunch at The Jalopy

A couple of weekends ago, we had lunch at The Jalopy. I was excited to try it… it’s a Mack truck transformed into a kitchen, serving up rotisserie chicken sandwiches and freshly fried chips. I like the murals.

The menu is pretty interesting… every sandwich is the same bread, same rotisserie chicken, but with different toppings and sauces.

There’s a chute in the back where they’ll drop your sandwich for you. Cute!

Our chips came out first… I think these are just regular veggie chips, but they’re flash fried and sprinkled with your choice of seasonings. We chose salt and vinegar and dill. They were still warm, which was nice.

I chose the Folletto: pepperoncini brine, housemade pickled peppers, scallions and parsley salad. I liked the pickles… and there was an extra slice of bread in the middle to sop up all the juices.

Natalie chose The Original, with chicken demi-glace and red onion marmalade. Pretty solid.

Justin had the Son Hong, with sweet and savory chili sauce, pickled onions, cucumbers, and cilantro salad.

Overall, it was good. I think if you like this style of sandwich, this is the place for you. I didn’t like that the bread was so soft and soggy that it fell apart midway through. I wanted the chicken pieces to be bigger… it was in tiny chunks, and since it’s not dressed in anything, it has a tendency to just kind of fall out of the sandwich. It’s like there’s nothing in it to really hold it all together. Actually, I think I’d like it better as an open-faced sandwich. Still, the owner was super-friendly and laid-back, and the Mack trailer is pretty cool. 🙂
