  • Summer.

Happy Summer Solstice, everyone! I’m spending mine at home, sick with a stomach virus. Or food poisoning. Whatever it is, it is NOT GOOD, people. Not good.

But I do want to recognize this first day of summer. I read Mav’s post about summer, and realized that I feel the same way about it… Summer makes me a bit anxious. Every day I feel the pressure to go out and enjoy it, to go swimming or ride a bike or eat a snow cone or take a hike or get a tan. And sometimes I do nothing except sit inside and enjoy the air conditioning, but then I feel guilty about it. (I excel at feeling guilty.)

Still, it’s the first day of summer (officially, because it’s been summer for a month or two here in Austin), and so I want to think positively about it. Maybe remembering what I used to love about summer as a kid in New Mexico will help here:

    • Slip ‘n Slide!
    • Playing in the piles of grass that were raked up on the lawn after my dad or mom mowed it (the piles made GREAT tunnels for Hot Wheels or Micro Machines)
    • Riding my bike around the neighborhood with my friend Sheri
    • Picking squash and zucchini in Sheri’s garden
    • Koolaid
    • Riding in the back of a pick-up truck
    • No school!
    • Sweet tea
    • Playing in the sprinkler
    • Really sweet watermelon (yellow and red) and cantaloupe from Haldeman Farms (why can’t I find really sweet melon anymore?)
    • Baseball and softball games
    • Matanzas at my aunt’s house (yep, the full meal deal, people)

See? That was fun. Now back to sipping juice on the couch (stupid stomach virus). 🙂

  • Five Senses Friday

I’m taking a cue from Abby today, and taking a moment to ponder my experiences in the past few days.

    Tasting
Anise and sugar in Ines Rosales Olive Oil Tortas, with a cup of chai

    Hearing
    Vuvuzela!!!!

    Seeing
Lovely flowers on a recent walk to the market

    Smelling
Coffee brewing in the morning, because Justin has taken to waking up at 6:30 a.m. to watch the early World Cup games every day

    Feeling
Kitty fur against my face, because Roux has taken to sleeping next to my head at night

  • Looking Down

    News and tidbits:

    • I’ve started a new flickr set called Looking Down. I didn’t realize how much I love these types of photos, and I’m really looking forward to taking more of them.
    • I actually do have some food/recipes to share, I just haven’t made time to get the darn photos off my camera. Soon! I promise.
    • Hey, did I tell you guys about my other project? Project #4,759? This one’s called Star Wars at Work. My coworker collects Star Wars action figures, and I think they’re insanely cool. So I’m spending some evenings photographing them. 🙂
    • Last night we got to go to a preview opening for Uchiko! Justin designed all the menus and such, so he snagged us seats at the invitation-only dinner. I think it will still be a few weeks before they open for real, and I can’t wait! Everything was delicious, and the new space is just gorgeous.
    • It’s haircut day! I can always count on my hair looking great on the day I plan to cut it. Too late, hair! You’ve had your chance! Chop chop.

Anyway, here are a few of my Looking Down photos.

  • The Great Outdoors

Abby and I took a field trip to The Great Outdoors. I took all my cameras. 🙂

    What I saw, on film:

It was beautiful. I’m looking forward to more photo dates!

  • Food on Film

I just developed a couple of rolls of film from my friend Bud’s Canon EOS Elan II (he was so nice to let me borrow it!). I’m in love! Food in itself is beautiful to me, but food on film? Heaven. The colors are so rich, the graininess so cool, the unpredictability so fun.
