Things & Stuff

  • recent eats at home #2

We seem to be having a lot of breakfast lately.

Crescent rolls filled with Nutella, coffee.

Iced mocha: cold-brewed coffee (my new favorite thing to make at home), soy milk and chocolate syrup.

For me: scrambled eggs with Gruyere, toast with butter, ripe berries and iced mocha (this time made with chocolate soy milk). For Justin, egg and jalapeño tacos.

    Ravioli with marinara and toast.

A mix of Barbara’s high fiber cereal, raisin bran, and Cheerios. Justin thinks mixing cereals like this is gross. (You can just see Roux’s nose in the photo, he wanted a sniff.)

Scrambled eggs with Gruyere, sauteed tomatoes, buttered toast, and iced mocha. I’m in a scrambled egg phase. If you know me at all, you know this is HUGE. I generally don’t like scrambled eggs, and always choose fried eggs. I have no explanation for this.

Spring rolls, peanut sauce, and Bacardi cocktails. Justin is the spring roll maker of the house – this time he filled them with lettuce, cilantro, red bell pepper, sauteed tofu and rice noodles. Sometimes he adds carrots, avocado, and/or cucumber. They’re so freakin’ good.

  • Letters #3

    Dear Husband,

I have no idea how you’ve had the energy to take care of me and nurse me back to health these days. You’ve made me mashed potatoes and chicken noodle soup, you’ve taken me for walks, you’ve brought me Jan’s chocolate cake from Fresh Plus and Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups. You’ve hugged me and kissed me, you’ve cheered me up, you’ve made me laugh, and you’ve just made me feel better. I would like to request you as my nurse during all future illnesses and injuries.

    Dear Sleep,

Where are you these days? I miss you. Come back soon.

    Dear God,

Thank you for speedy recoveries. Thank you for medicines that work – both for me and for my friend, who feels better than ever. Thank you for coffee beans and sugar cane and red, ripe strawberries. Thank you for staying with me in times of fear and anxiety. It’s so nice knowing you’re there.

    Dear Toads,

I hear you at night by the pond now, singing about summer. I missed you this winter, but now that you’re back, I wish you had a more convenient singing schedule. Can we say quiet time starts at midnight? K thx.

    Dear Richard Linklater,

I can’t believe it’s taken me this long to watch Before Sunrise and Before Sunset. How lovely, romantic, intelligent, and hopeful! Please, sir, I want some more.

Hope you all have a great weekend!

  • My favorites: Romeo + Juliet

Okay, this may be where some of us disagree. I adore Baz Luhrmann. I loved Moulin Rouge!, I loved Romeo + Juliet, and I can’t wait to see The Great Gatsby. I do plan to see Australia very soon – Justin keeps telling me I should see it (because he knows I adore Baz Luhrmann), but I’m afraid I’ll just cry and cry. (Which is silly, because every time I watch Moulin Rouge! I bawl hysterically, and I still watch it over and over again.)

Anyway, I know some people really don’t go for Luhrmann films. But I love artistic, surreal, beautiful movies – I just watched I Am Love and was completely blown away. I love love love Amelie. I can’t quite figure out what this genre is, but I love it. And so I’m going to save some of my favorite images from these films. 🙂

So anyway, Romeo + Juliet. I love this version, chopped up and mutilated though it may be. It’s great cinema.

This is when I first fell in love with Leonardo DiCaprio:

And then of course (that hair!):

He’s so young! (smoldering stare: check.)

And of course the fact that he saunters around in suits doesn’t hurt (ahem, Edward).

Here’s when I decided I wanted fairy wings for EVERY Halloween (though I’ve only had them once, oddly):

Also, I love John Leguizamo. He reminds me a lot of my brother. And as Tybalt, Prince of Cats? Awesome.

I love the styling of Verona Beach, with a mix of Shakespearean language and grungy beach design.

I love Mercutio and his tale of Queen Mab and her hazelnut chariot.

And falling in love through a fish tank.

I love that Friar Laurence has a greenhouse and a bad-ass tattoo (sadness, Pete Postlethwaite).

Argh! Hearbreak! Despair! Gorgeous young Leo!

I love that there are shrines and candles and statuettes everywhere.

And golden books, and rings on chains, and poetry.

And of course, neon and candlelight.

Now if you’ll excuse me, I think I’ll go read Romeo and Juliet until I fall asleep. Good night!

  • from my journal: authentic food

I wrote this in my journal last night, and thought I’d share it here in case anyone is thinking about this, too.

I am thinking about real, authentic, homemade food. Something that a grandmother somewhere is making for lunch. Something that is still being made in homes in rural Italy or France, in Mexico or Spain.

I’m thinking of a plate of steamed artichokes with a bowl of melted butter and a few lemon wedges. I’m thinking of ripe strawberries that have been roasted and tossed with Pimms. Of a bowl of fresh ricotta drizzled with honey for breakfast. A simple seared pork chop with arugula dressed with lemon and olive oil. A bowl of white beans drizzled with fruity olive oil. Thick yogurt sprinkled with brown sugar and ripe berries. Pasta tossed with olive oil, lemon, fresh herbs, and cheese. Thick slices of toast smeared with homemade jam. Whole chicken roasted with potatoes and carrots. A bowl of ripe figs and walnuts. A bottle of red wine, a hunk of bread, and hard cheese. A simple omelet filled with cheese and herbs.

It’s also the thought of beautiful food. I know that food does not have to be gourmet, organic, vegetarian, gorgeous, perfect in order for it to nourish and be delicious. But there’s something I want out of food – something that Ai captures in her photographs, no matter what she’s eating. Is it presentation? Dishware? Care in preparation? Or the food itself? Maybe it’s a reverence of food, a respect of nourishment?

I can picture a morning table with an omelet and hearty toast. Or a bowl of oatmeal with bright berries and shaved almonds. Or homemade granola with yogurt and chopped apple.

Lunch could be a sandwich smeared with homemade mayonnaise and sliced fresh vegetables. A bowl of vegetable soup and a hunk of bread. Baguette with salumi and cheese. Arugula salad with poached eggs and shaved parmesan.

Dinner might be a whole roasted chicken with potatoes and carrots. A filet of fish and steamed vegetables in a parchment paper packet. A casserole of roasted vegetables with a hunk of bread and cheese. A spread of salumi, cheese, olives, nuts, bread and fruit. potato soup with a swirl of pesto. Simple pizza topped with tomatoes and fresh mozzarella.

Desserts would be cupcakes, bundt cakes, loaf cakes. Fresh fruit pies. Cowboy cookies. Meringues layered with berries and cream. Roasted berries with balsamic vinegar. Olive oil cake. Ripe, fresh fruit with creme fraiche for dipping. Shards of dark chocolate and toasted walnuts. A bowl of ripe cherries, or a coconut cake.

What is it that these things have in common? What is that thread that I’m looking for? Is it just a return to homemade food? Beautiful food? Simple food? Unprocessed food? The word authentic keeps coming to mind, but authentic to what? I just can’t quite wrap my head around it.

I just read that in the 1920s, the average woman spent 30 hours a week in the kitchen for cooking or cleanup. In the 1950s, 20 hours a week. Now – 4.4 hours a week. It’s not that I want to start spending four or five hours a day in the kitchen, necessarily, but somehow that does sound… satisfying. Food is one of my favorite things. To focus on that – on feeding and nourishing me and Justin in the best way possible, sounds lovely. But I know it’s a very romantic view of cooking and eating. It doesn’t seem possible to obtain with a full-time job. And what about those nights when we’re both tired, and take-out is fine?

I wonder if it just has to do with a romantic vision of food? When I think back to what I ate today (at home, not feeling well), it sounds boring. Raisin bran, soy milk, quesadillas, baby carrots, juice. What if that was described differently? Hearty cold cereal doused with soy milk; thick tortillas held together with melted Colby-jack cheese; fresh, crispy carrots; sweet, cold juice. Verrrrry interesting.

Perhaps, then, I am craving homemade food. And I want to write about it, and photograph it with film, and cook it myself. And I want to have the energy and time to do it, and go the farmer’s market twice a week and make my own bread. I want to shake our cocktails into vintage glasses. And I want to sit down at a table to eat each meal. With Justin. And I want a million dollars and a box of rainbows and a pony.

All of this boils down to this: I love food. I dream about food. I think food is romantic, and important, and lovely. I like to write about it, and I like to photograph it, especially with film. I feel passionate about these things. These are things to think about when I’m deciding what to eat and how to spend my time. I think.

Ah, friends. Welcome to my brain. 🙂

  • Stuff I like #2

Pugly Pixel, and her lovely side blog, Powered by Pastries. She provides FREE downloads of images, backgrounds, photoshop files (I’ve used her washi tape images before) – plus instructions on how to use all of them. I redesigned my desktop wallpaper above, dividing the space by category, then downloading cute icons for each folder. She also recommended using Desktop Notes, which stay pinned to your desktop and are perfect for to-do lists. I never knew my desktop could be so dang useful. Even better, you can become a Premium member and get all kinds of goodies for just $5 a month. Hopefully you guys will see some fun blog bling on here soon, (as I learn how to use it all).

Did you know that you can get your official 2010 Federal Taxpayer Receipt? You put in your information and it will tell you about how much of your tax dollars were spent on different government categories. So freakin’ cool. (via Swiss Miss)

    **

Aimee Wenske has started a separate blog just for her food photography. Every photo is just gorgeous.

    **

Have I ever mentioned Miss Moss? Hands-down, my favorite blog. Her style and ideas and music and tastes are so similar to mine that I feel like I’m reading a magazine tailored just to me every time I read her blog.

Brian Ferry visited St. John Hotel and mentioned the Little Bun Moment. This idea, the writing, the photo – this is what life should be about.

Hope you all have a wonderful weekend!
