Things & Stuff

  • I’m a junkie.

A bath junkie, that is. Yesterday I was wandering aimlessly, up to no good, when I found a bath junkie shop on Brodie Lane. Ohymyga. For people like me, who are crazy about smelly-good bath products, this place is like paradise. It’s a whole store full of empty bottles…for lotion, bubble bath, perfume, face wash, body wash, baby soap, you name it. After you’ve picked out your product, the most amazing thing happens: You are sent to the fragrance bar to create your own scent. I would guess there’s between 150 and 200 different scents…everything from Brown Sugar to Cool Water to Lemongrass to Ylang Ylang. You can mix and match whatever you want. There were some fun recipes you could use, such as Lavender and Chamomile for relaxation.

While I was there, mesmerized by the fragrance bar, a gal came in to create her own perfume. She chose a mix of Buttercream and Lettuce. Who knew? I decided on Bubbling Bath Crystals, and a scent that I named “Coconut Cupcake”…a mix of Coconut Dream and Buttercream. Yum. And if that’s not enough, you get to choose the color of your product as well. I chose cinnamon, and the crystals were a nice, natural brown. I’ve already used the crystals twice (I like baths!), and though I’m disappointed in the amount of bubbles I ended up with, I loved the scent and the crystals are really moisturizing.

Connie, the franchisee, is super-sweet, and so passionate about the products. She’s willing to chat it up about her favorite mixes, and lend a hand (literally–you get to try out these scents on your wrists) when needed. I think next time I’ll go for lotion of some sort, or possibly face wash, or maybe shower gel.

For those of you who MIGHT be interested, my birthday’s coming up. You can buy a “Fill-it-up” bag with an empty bottle for a product, and I can go in and choose my scents and color. You know, just in case you MIGHT be giving me a gift. (Please, husband, read this post.)

You can check out some of their products at their website.

  • Use it up!

Another attempt to use some CSA produce: Lentil Soup. This was on the stove Saturday night when we were being crafty ladies. I used to make lentil soup at least once a week, using Jacques Pepin’s recipe, but somehow I forgot about it. When Leti and I were shopping on Saturday, I said, “How about lentil soup for dinner? With kale in it?” and she immediately agreed.

Can I remember the recipe? I’ll try. (Leti, let me know if I forgot something!)

    Lentil Soup with Kale

    • 3 cans vegetable broth
    • 4 cups water
    • 1 cup lentils, rinsed and picked over
    • 2 cloves garlic, minced
    • 1/2 a medium onion, chopped
    • 1 medium potato, peeled and diced
    • 2 large carrots, diced
    • 1 head of kale, chopped
    • 1 teaspoon thyme

Put everything except the kale in a soup pot and simmer, partially covered, for 30 minutes. Add the kale and simmer for 10 to 15 minutes more, or until lentils are tender.

    Makes 6 servings.

  • Crafty night

Saturday night Shara, Leti, and I got together for some craftiness and general girlie fun. Shara brought delicious snacks…mimosas, baguette, Nutella, and Brie. I had a pot of lentil soup on the stove, and we ate, talked, laughed, and crafted.

We’ve been considering starting a website to sell a few of our handcrafted goods. Shara’s an excellent knitter and seamstress, Leti’s amazing with jewelry, and I’m…well…I’m a little good at a lot of things. We decided to have a sewing night every so often to get an idea of how long it would take to make things, and how much work it would be.

Shara decided to sew a skirt with a stretchy waistband like the one I made last week. She used a bit of Justin’s t-shirt (he didn’t wear it anyway) to make the waistband, and used a blind hem on the bottom. It turned out really cute! I cut and pinned an apron for Leti, but I have yet to sew it. It’s going to be gorgeous if I can ever get it done. I’m much more of a planner…measure this, pin that, draw it out…while Shara just cuts and sews.

Roux decided to get involved, too…he was the only boy allowed in the fun. Justin and Rob (Shara’s boyfriend) were having Halo Night at Rob’s place, playing Halo 2 on multiple screens with multiple X-Boxes. We girls joked that the boys were at Nerd Night, until I realized that we were also having a Nerd Night of sorts. It’s Saturday night! Let’s sew! What can I say? I’m a nerd.

  • Last chance dinner

Friday nights are a bit stressful here in our little kitchen. It’s the night that we realize that we haven’t used up our CSA produce, and that we’ll be picking up another full load in the morning. We open the fridge, pull out all the produce, and see what we can make of it.

This time I made a kind of Asian noodle dish…I wish I had measured proportions so I could give you a real recipe, because it was delicious! Basically, I sauteed some garlic in a little olive oil mixed with a bit of sesame oil, then added a head of chopped bok choy, some broccoli florets, a bit of powdered ginger (we were out of fresh), a can of vegetable broth, and a few squirts of soy sauce. I cooked that until the veggies were crisp-tender.

Meanwhile, I made my basic Honey-Glazed Tofu recipe, increasing the amount of sriracha and adding in pine nuts just before adding the honey mixture. I served all this up on some cooked spaghetti tossed with a little sesame oil. Justin loved this so much that he ate three huge bowls of it…I thought he was going to make himself sick, but he was equal to the task.

We have more bok choy this week, and I think I’ll be making this dish again. I’ve noticed that I’ve strayed from using recipes recently…I haven’t been perusing cookbooks much, and when I do, I file an idea somewhere in my brain, and create something kind of like it. I need to be writing these down, though…if I make this dish again this week, I’ll make an effort to record amounts and update the recipe. Enjoy this cold, cloudy Monday! (What? Isn’t it cold and cloudy where you are, too?)

  • Notes on tofu

As it turns out, not all tofu is created equal. Last week, I attempted to make my chocolate mousse recipe for a party, using a different brand of silken tofu…Nasoya. The result was a pureed mess of horrible soy-tasting mush that had a bit of chocolate flavor to it. It was so gross, I broke down and bought truffles at Whole Foods to take the party instead. I dumped the whole concoction in the trash.

So I’d just like to add that Morinu silken tofu is totally the way to go. It’s smooth and nearly flavorless, allowing the chocolate to really come through. I also have adjusted the original recipe to reflect my recent findings…a full bag of chocolate chips makes for the perfect chocolate mousse, rather than the 1 1/2 cups I used before. More chocolate is always better! And finally, I forgot the vanilla this time, and it was still delicious. What can I say? My recipes always seem to morph.

This time, instead of making balloon cups, I made tiny chocolate cups by spooning melted chocolate into foil-lined candy cups, then smearing it around. I chilled the cups until the chocolate hardened, then peeled the foil off. It was a lot of work, but the result was delicious. You can see the hand-made cup on the left in the photo above. The cup on the right was purchased at Central Market by my pal Lindsay…I was a little upset to find that you could purchase these things after I had spent so much time making them, but what can you do? I took these little babies to our crafty gathering last night, and everyone enjoyed them.

Speaking of our crafty gathering, we’ve finally decided on a name for ourselves: Zen Femme. It’s funny that we veered so far away from “Stitch” or “Craft” or “Make” or all the other words we had originally liked, but I love the vagueness of the name. We get together to have a good time, live in the moment, create, and be in the company of other wonderful women. It’s a perfect name!
