Things & Stuff

  • More stitching

I finished a couple more things this week…

This little blouse for Lindsay…I think it’s too cute! I used a pattern from one of my Japanese craft books, and made it teeny tiny for Linds. It actually wasn’t that hard to do…the hardest part was sizing it down.

I also (finally) finished this scarf that I started months ago…I wish it was cold outside so I could wear it! It’s super-soft and cozy, made of a fuzzy eyelash yarn I splurged on a while back.

Last night Lindsay and Chad joined us for dinner, and I went for an Asian-finger-food theme. I made lettuce wraps and edamame, and bought a variety of nori rolls at Whole Foods. It was yum.

I’m off to write my weekly post for Wardrobe Refashion…happy Thursday!

  • Good things, bad things

Good thing: Adorn magazine! Holy moly, this is a fun magazine. I just bought it (it hit the newsstands today), and I’ve already read it cover-to-cover…and I plan on re-reading it later today. Nearly every project looked like something I’d like to do, and of course every little handmade product was one I wanted to purchase. I’m definitely subscribing to this one…go look for it! Right now! Why are you still sitting there?!

Bad thing: I made this recipe for Asian Dumpling Soup last night…and unfortunately, my dumplings completely fell apart. I didn’t even cook them very long…I think they’d be better if they were just plopped frozen into the soup just before serving. Maybe it was the brand I bought, but my soup ended up looking like this:

Not a good thing. Any of you out there who know Justin at all know that he did NOT like this recipe. The soup itself tasted great, but soggy dumpling mass? Not so good. I’d consider making it again without the dumplings…I think even if they weren’t overcooked Justin wouldn’t like them. It’s a texture thing. The only dumpling-like thing he likes is Lindsay’s matzoh ball soup.

Yesterday I listened to an old Craftsanity podcast in which the host interviewed the ladies of Knitta Please, a fun knitting-graffiti group from Houston. Have you guys listened to Craftsanity yet? It’s so interesting to hear how all these crafty people got started, what inspired them, and how they work. I really liked the interview with Alicia Paulson…she’s so insightful. Anyway, the Knittas podcast has inspired me to knit an antenna cozy for my car. And maybe the cars of my friends. Be on the lookout, friends.

  • Fun things and Food Finds

A while back, Sarah from The Small Object sent out some samples of her new iron-on transfers to get feedback on how well they worked. I was one of the lucky ones who got to try them out, and I’ve been anxious to put them on something. I ironed them both on some plain blue fabric so I could use them as patches later on. This one was my first attempt at iron-ons, so I goofed it up a little (the iron wasn’t hot enough). But he’s still super-cute! You can actually buy this guy now at Sarah’s shop, along with lots of other cute things that I covet.

I found this wonderful tutorial page on Lynn’s blog, Mollychicken, and gathered up some scrap fabric to make this awesome little wallet. I used my little block buddy as a patch and embroidered around the edges to secure him. I love it! It’s perfect for when I just need to carry my wallet and my Burt’s Bees lip balm. Seriously, when do I really need to carry all that junk in my purse? But a junk-schlepper I am. I’d love to try all these tutorials…especially the sweet little bracelet. I think that might be next on my crafty list.

Today Kim posted a this great list of things that every Italian knew growing up…and I loved it! It was so fun to see the little details of another culture. I poked around and found this list for Mexicans, and could relate to a lot of them!

Next a couple of food finds. First (and most importantly), chocolate.

I’ve been looking for chocolate cookies that I can snack on when I don’t feel like baking my own, but I’m so picky! They all seem to be too dry, and need to be dipped in milk, or aren’t chocolatey enough. But these little cookies hit the spot. Actually, they remind me of the Keebler sandwich cookies they used to make when I was little (remember the vanilla ones, Dad?). I can only find them at Central Market here, though, so I’m not sure how widely distributed they are.

And now for my favorite beverage…water!

I’m so excited about this water…it’s so pretty! It’s fun to have something in a pretty little bottle to sip on when everyone else has beer bottles and such. One of the girls from my stitching group brought this last time and squeezed a bit of lime in it…I wanted one immediately. It’s just spring water, but it tastes yummy (which for me, means it tastes like Evian, NOT like Ozarka). I’m going to have a hard time recycling the bottles…they’re so pretty I just want to keep them!

    Have a wonderful evening!

  • Oh, pasta!

This dish was sooooo good. I was a little skeptical at first…I thought it would be dry and the flavors would be weak, but I was wrong. The deep earthiness of the sun-dried tomatoes really balances out the freshness of the asparagus. And the pine nuts! Oh, but they’re delicious. The pasta was still great the next day, too…it would be a great dish to pack up for lunch.

The original recipe called for fusilli (corkscrew pasta), but I found whole wheat penne and decided to go with that. It worked out well…sometimes the pine nuts would snuggle into a penne and you’d get a special treat. I also used dried tomatoes and soaked them in just-boiled water for about 10 minutes to rehydrate them. I toasted the pine nuts in a dry skillet over low heat for a few minutes.

Penne with Roasted Asparagus, Sun-Dried Tomatoes, and Pine Nuts

    • 12 ounces thin asparagus, bottoms trimmed and cut diagonally into 2-inch pieces
    • 3 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil
    • 1/2 cup oil-packed or rehydrated sun-dried tomatoes
    • 1 pound whole wheat penne
    • 2 large garlic cloves, minced
    • Salt and freshly ground black pepper
    • 1/4 cup chopped fresh basil
    • 3 tablespoons pine nuts, toasted

Preheat oven to 450ËšF. Toss the asparagus with 1 tablespoon of the olive oil and place on a lightly oiled baking sheet (lined with foil for easy cleanup). Roast just until tender, 6 to 8 minutes. Remove from the oven and set aside.

Cut the tomatoes into 1/4-inch-wide strips and set aside.

Cook the pasta in a large pot of boiling salted water, stirring occasionally, until al dente, 8 to 10 minutes.

While the pasta is cooking, heat the remaining 2 tablespoons olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the garlic and cook, stirring, until fragrant, about 30 seconds. Add the roasted asparagus, tomatoes, and salt and pepper to taste. Reduce the heat to low and keep warm.

Drain the pasta and place in a large, shallow serving bowl. Add the asparagus mixture, basil, and pine nuts. Toss to combine.

    Makes 4 servings.

  • More skirts!

Okay, I think I need to lay off the skirts for a while, for mine and Lindsay’s sake (or more accurately, for the sake of our over-stuffed closets). I made these two for her from some fabric she chose from my fabric stash. I used the same Simplicity 5505 pattern, and they were so quick and easy. The brown skirt is made from a thin, flowy fabric…I think I have just enough left for a scarf.

I’ve had this yellow fabric for ages, and have never found anything great to do with it. The skirt turned out well, and I still have some fabric left…any suggestions/ideas on what to do with it? The edging is just too pretty to cut off.

I’ve actually been pretty crafty lately…I’ve got a few more things for show-and-tell, and some new recipes…I’ve been cooking, too! It’s usually one or the other (or neither), but I’ve had more energy lately, and more time to create.

On a completely unrelated note, we went to the theater to see Cars last night. Soooo cute! Dad, if you’re reading this, you HAVE to go see it. You. Will. Love it.

    Have a wonderful weekend, everyone!
