  • Back to meat?

Believe it or not, I cooked meat this week. Thankfully, it was already cut up (such a nice butcher), and trimmed and ready to use. I was surprised that I wasn’t bothered more by the rawness of it. It’s been so long since I’ve cooked meat, I was afraid I might chicken out.

Anyway, I was flipping through one of my Cooking Light annuals and found this recipe for coconut-crusted chicken…and I decided it was worth a shot. We made mashed potatoes and Tom Green to go with it…ultimate comfort food. When I first started cooking, I figured out that green beans and tomatoes went well together. So I created this incredibly complex recipe: dump one can of diced tomatoes and one can of green beans in a pot. Heat it up. That’s Tom Green.

The chicken was delicious…though I did think the panko crumbs were soggy in places. I wonder how to fix that problem…I suppose deep-frying would create an all-around crisp crust, but who wants to deep-fry? Not me.

I used this recipe, and substituted half a pound of chicken tenders for the thighs and legs. I just couldn’t deal with bones yet. 🙂

  • Fresh and tasty

We made this little salad last night, and though it was really tasty then, it was even better today at lunch. The asparagus and the arugula add such great texture and flavor to the salad. Justin and I agreed that our cherry tomatoes were either a bit too big or a bit too flavorful for the dish…next time we might add fewer and chop them smaller.

We celebrated Peaster on Sunday with our regular crew, and I brought pumpkin empanadas and fresh strawberries. Shara made babka, Polish egg bread, and Boca “Bratwurst” simmered in Vernor’s ginger ale. We could not believe how juicy and flavorful the soysages were…a bite of soysage with a bite of egg bread…was heaven. Lindsay brought latkes with homemade applesauce, perfectly crisp and wonderful.

I also baked a couple of cheesecakes on Sunday for a co-worker’s birthday on Monday. They looked very pretty, but I didn’t get to try any, so I can’t vouch for the flavor (though I’m not a big cheesecake, so I didn’t mind much). Everyone at work who tried some said it was great, though. I took along a bowlful of thawed frozen strawberries sprinkled with a little sugar to go on top.

We watched a couple of DVDs this weekend…Marie Antoinette and A Guide to Recognizing Your Saints. I thought they were both fabulous…Marie Antoinette for the romantic pink-ness of it all, and Guide to Recognizing Your Saints for the brash, tough-neighborhood reality of it. I’d highly recommend them both.

Other than that, there’s been a little yoga, a little crafting (more paper wallets for Leti and me), and even some pottery. The girls and I got together last week to paint some pottery at Cafe Monet, and we had a great time. I still haven’t seen my piece yet, but I’m hoping it turned out well (I just did a solid color to avoid that 5-year-old-with-finger-paints look that I knew I’d end up with).

Okay, time for a bit of blog browsing…I’m hopelessly addicted to The Sartorialist, and I could spend hours going through his archives admiring the fabulous fashion. Have a great week, everyone!

  • Birthday goodies

Look at how generous and lovely my loved ones are!

Shara and Rob bought me this cool book:

Fun, fun, fun! I’ve been wanting this book forever…I can’t wait to cut up Justin’s t-shirts. 🙂

Leti gave me this fabulous chocolatiere, an awesome ceramic pitcher with a frother inside specifically for making hot chocolate…and preferably with the delicious Mexican chocolate that Shara and Rob gave to me a while back. Lindsay and Chad found these gorgeous glass candle holders…I absolutely LOVE this color.

    And lovely, lovely jewelry…

A turquoise necklace I bought for myself in Albuquerque, fabulous earrings from my friend Connie, and an amazing turquoise and red amber necklace that my mom bought me in Santa Fe.

I also got lots of emails and phone calls and cards…my supervisor at work even brought in mascarpone tarts, a beautiful tulip, and other goodies for me.

My sister and her family sent a gift card for Amazon.com, which I’m thinking of using on a couple of magazine subscriptions. (Gourmet? Saveur? Eating Well?)

And my mom sent some funds that I’m thinking of spending on chocolate. Yes, Mom, chocolate. Specifically, chocolate covered figs and this box of chocolate goodness.

Thank you, thank you, thank you everyone!

  • When you turn 29…

You don’t have to make your bed in the morning.

You might get lots of presents.

You might have “sweet of choice,” which is when your loving friend makes anything in the world you want for dessert. And if you choose a chocolate cake from a box with lots of canned icing, she’ll make it.

You might get to get all dressed up for a schmancy dinner with your honey.

It might be a very good day, and the start of a very good year.

Thanks, everyone, for all your birthday wishes and gifts. I’ll post photos of them soon!

  • Fresh and yummy

Oh, the joys of simple foods! This has to be one of my favorite recipes in a long time, and it’s so gosh-darn simple (you can find the recipe here). Sweet tomatoes, spicy arugula, and pungent feta…everything just barely cooked and super flavorful. I forget how much I love warm cherry tomatoes…and salad in my pasta.

A long time ago, my friend Shara made spaghetti for a group of us girls at her apartment, and we had mixed salad greens on the side. I think I was a bit nervous (I was meeting lots of new gals that night), and in a hurry to eat, so I forked up a leaf of lettuce with a twirl of pasta. It was a match made in heaven! I loved the crunchy freshness of the greens with the toothsome pasta, so any pasta dish that includes slightly wilted greens is a winner in my book.

In other news, I’m turning 29 this Friday. 29! Yikes! I’m having some issues with feeling old…will I reach 30 without traveling the world? Without writing the great American novel or a cookbook? Without finding my one true talent? It’s possible, maybe even probable. I bet when I’m 40 I still won’t know what I want to be when I grow up. I’m also feeling a bit like I missed out on some things. I was always a mature kid. I was always good, never irresponsible. Married with a degree by 21, with no debt or late payments or drunken debauchery. I feel like I’ve been acting 30 all my life…now it’s almost here and I wish I had been a little more reckless. Carefree. Irresponsible.

Is it okay to act 19, just for one year? Instead of 29, can I be a sassy, silly 19 year old, ready to take on the world? I think I might just have to try.
