Things & Stuff

  • Colds and iphone Apps

I have a cold. Again. I feel like I’m always sick, either with severe allergies or colds. I’m thinking I seriously need to eat more fruits and veggies. My supervisor eats a TON of them… bowls of apples and grapes and blackberries and oranges, salads and veggie soups… and she’s NEVER sick. I had every intention to eat more produce at the start of the new year, but that fizzled pretty quickly. I have a banana on my desk, and it’s been there since yesterday. I have clementines in the fridge, and they’re starting to get sad. I have to find some way to get those vitamin-packed specimens in my belly.

In other random news, I’ve been downloading a lot of iPhone apps lately. Here are a few of my favorites:

    • Evernote. This is, hands-down, my favorite application EVER. I use the desktop version, the web version, and/or the iPhone version daily. It stores all the information you ever wanted to store, and it’s organized and searchable. I have folders for style ideas, for recipes, for home ideas, for deep thoughts, for Halloween costume ideas… I love this app.
    • Tweetdeck. I have to keep up with Twitter while I’m out and about.
    • Gowalla. This one’s fun for keeping track of places you visit, though I’m not sold on all the item-swapping and such.
    • GoodReads. This isn’t actually run by GoodReads, but it does access your book lists, which is really helpful when I’m strolling through the library looking for something new to read.
    • WordPress. For posting to poco-cocoa while I’m on the road.
    • Tumblr. For posting to twinkle lights while I’m on the road.
    • Facebook. Of course.
    • Shazam. Especially if I’m at East Side Show Room, and they’ve got a rockin’ playlist going… this app recognizes songs and gives you the name of the artist and song so you can buy it later.
    • University of Texas App. This is newly released, and it has a staff directory, maps, and all sorts of goodies. Of course, I work at UT, so it’s especially useful to me.
    • Flickr. I can view and edit all my photos from my iPhone, and view my contacts’ photos, too. I can even email them to friends.
    • Stylebook. I love this… I’m still setting it all up. You take photos of every item in your closet, then use this app to organize them and create outfit ideas.
    • MobileRSS. I use Google Reader for all of my blog-reading, and this allows me to keep up with blogs while I’m away from my computer.
    • iPeriod. Ladies, you need this. Seriously.
    • Flip ‘N Drink. Easy to use, with all the cocktail recipes you could want, searchable by ingredient or type.

I also have things like Epicurious, UrbanSpoon, and Pandora, but I don’t use them much.

Do you guys have any other favorites? Let me know!

**Edited to add: Holy smokes, peeps! New iPhone app: Tabbed Out. It allows you to pay your restaurant/bar tab FROM YOUR PHONE. Craziness. It’s being beta-tested in several Austin locations (Cipollina, East Side Show Room, Shangri-La…). So cool!

  • New Year’s Eve, 2010

I got my first batch of film photos developed and scanned today! I’m so excited… I love the colors, the errors, the blurriness. I can see how buying and developing film can get expensive, but I’m just going to have to budget for it, because I love my Holga so much!

Anyway, here’s a sampling of my film photos from New Year’s Eve. You can see the rest of my film photos on my flickr site.

    Happy Saturday, everyone!

  • FINO on a Friday

We had dinner at FINO tonight… we sat at the bar and chatted with our pal Mindy, and of course, Bill and James were behind the bar, Jason was expediting in the kitchen, and Brian was nearby managing it all. Rachel & Logan came by for drinks later in the evening… it was such a fun night!

    A few photos…

Bill’s drink special was Wassail – hot spiced punch with FINO sherry and apple brandy-poached apple and pear. Hot and soothing on a cold night like this.

We had lots of little fried things… like fried anchovy-stuffed olives, croquettes de jamon (crispy potato and benton country ham fritters, red eye coffee aioli), and Yukon gold potato chips with caper aoili. The red-eye coffee aioli was amazing.

We had the sweet potato pastilla – Phyllo stuffed with scrambled farm egg and almonds ras el hanout and pomegranate molasses. It was filled with chunks of sweet potato and crunchy bites of almonds.

We also had prawns with cilantro-lemon charmoula (not pictured) and quail with chickpeas and quail egg. The best part is breaking the yolk of the quail egg and mixing it into the chickpeas. Yum.

I was so happy to see chocolate on the dessert menu… Warm bittersweet chocolate cake with vanilla crema and cocoa-espresso sauce. It wasn’t too sweet or rich… just perfect, with an oozy center and crunchy bits of cacao nibs and salt.

    Another great night at FINO!

  • little pica!

Internets, I am pleased to introduce Little Pica (pronounced peekah)! She’s our new (to us) 2008 Suzuki XS4. I’d had Little Blue, our 1996 Chevy Cavalier, for 14 years, and it was finally time to let her go.

So now we have Little Pica, and she’s so cute! She’s small and comfy and sporty and perfect. She looks kind of red in these photos, but she’s’ really a dark orange. Yay! 🙂

  • 24 Diner, again

We had dinner again tonight at 24 Diner. We like that place.

Justin had the veggie po’boy. It was really tasty, and the vegetables were roasty-toasty, but it was almost impossible to eat without taking it apart and using a fork. Still, very good.

I decided on the Shepherds Pie, which was on the specials board. Yum.

It was filled with chunks of ground beef and lots of veggies, including fresh black-eyed peas, and was topped with their wonderful whipped potatoes. I cleaned my bowl, and it was not a small serving.

Justin had a cappuccino after dinner. Very grown-up and responsible.

I had a chocolate-peanut butter milkshake. Very decadent.

It’s seriously dangerous for our wallet to have 24 Diner so close to home. 🙂
