Things & Stuff

  • old things and new things

Yesterday we stopped at one of our favorite clothing shops, Cream Vintage. I have found so many great dresses and belts and such at this place! This time Justin picked up a purl-snap shirt, and I roamed around and took photos with my BRAND NEW CANON REBEL T1I!!!!

I’m so excited… I’ve been wanting a digital SLR for so long, and finally, finally, I have one in my hands. So hopefully the photos around here will only get better and better, as I keep learning on my new Rebel and my little film Holga. Yay for old clothes and new cameras!

  • forced lovin’

In our household, we have a thing called Forced Lovin’. It started with our orange kitty, Roux. He’s very independent, and doesn’t often like to be held. I always wanted to hold him though, and pet him and love him and squeeze him… He’s kind of a big cat, and very strong, so it was often hard for me to pick him up and hold him without him wiggling his way free. So Justin would pick him up and hold him tight, and though he’d squirm, he couldn’t get away, and then I could come in for lots of kisses and lovin’. We refer to this as Group Hug, or, if he’s especially squirmy, Forced Lovin’. And we sometimes sing a song about it, to the tune of “My Buddy” (remember that jingle, for that really scary life-sized doll?)… Forced Lovin’, Forced Lovin’… Forced Lovin’ and meeeeee!

Anyway, I’ve decided on some Forced Lovin’ of my own. I signed up for Farmhouse Delivery again (they miraculously had one spot left for my delivery area this session), this time with a weekly commitment. I’ll be receiving a bin of local produce once a week, along with any other local goodies I order (cheeses, olive oil, meats, breads, etc.). So I’ll be forced to cook at home, and to cook with veggies and fruits. I’ll be forced to take care of my body and my little family by feeding us lovely, homemade, veggie-filled food. I’m giving us Food Forced Lovin’.

I also believe that we’ll be eating healthier food. But my definition of healthy has changed. As a dietitian, healthy food meant low in saturated and trans fats, less simple carbohydrates, more omega 3’s, etc. But I am so DONE with that. I’m so done with thinking of food as individual nutrients, as chemicals, as phytoestrogens and antioxidants. I’m just going to try to eat more Real Food.

That will probably include cream, and butter, and cheese. It will include bacon, and lamb, and eggs. And hopefully, a lot of it will be local, humanely raised, pasture-fed.

I miss cooking. We have been having some fabulous meals out on the town this year, from multi-course menus at Uchi to curry buns from a food trailer. And we will definitely still be dining out (tomorrow we’re having dinner with friends at G’raj Mahal!), but hopefully not as often. Hopefully I’ll be cooking more than just spaghetti, or sandwiches, or baked potatoes. Hopefully, we’ll be healthier and spend less money. Hopefully, I’ll get back in my little kitchen and fall right back into the swing of things. I’m sure I’ll still be baking goodies and snacking on the occasional Cheetoh, but I’ll be cooking a bit more.

I am the Queen of Forgotten Projects, but hopefully that weekly bin of lovely veggies, grown by nearby farmers, will help me stick with this one.  🙂

  • haircut!

Thank goodness for Joey at Vain Salon… she always makes my hair look good. I’ve been wanting this haircut for ages, but I’ve been too scared to do it.

Today, I decided to just go for it!

    Yay for haircuts! 🙂

  • Tiki Mondays

Aside from the usual lovely drinks, such as this Sazerac and Last Word (which are not on the menu, but Adam and Chauncey will make them for you, and you will love them)…

… for the next few weeks, Tipsy Texan David Alan is setting up shop at East Side Show Room every Monday from 5 – 9 p.m. to make tiki drinks!

I stopped by yesterday with my pal Lindsay, and met up with Rachel and Logan, Lara and Bill. David is making Navy Grog, Shaken Pina Coladas, Mai Tais, Nutmeg Needles, Fog Cutters, and a huge 2-serving fishbowl drink called Back in the ESSR.

    Here’s the Mai Tai…

… complete with David’s signature huge garnish of fresh mint. It immediately whisked me back to Oahu, and days on the beach, and swimsuits and flip flops and ukeleles and hula dancers. (Can we go back? Soon?)

Lindsay and I snacked on the grits and greens (spicy and hearty, with a smooth bechamel), potato gratin (so perfect… layered potatoes smothered in creamy bechamel), and a bowl of winter citrus and chicken soup (peppery and full of barley… so good!). I even used my Tabbed Out app to pay the bill! It was too much fun. I’m sure we’ll be back for more Tiki Mondays, so we can taste all the drinks we didn’t get to yesterday. 🙂

  • lunch at fino

We had lunch with our friend Andy at FINO to talk about her new blog. I can’t wait for her to get started on it… she has such a cool perspective on style and fashion. I’ll let you know as soon as it’s up and running!

We ordered spiced fries ($4), which were lovely (with fennel, I think). Andy ordered the grilled serrano ham and manchego cheese sandwich with a fried egg ($11), which looked amazing. I wondered if it would be too salty, with the ham and the cheese and all, but I forgot to ask her what she thought.

Justin had the spiced pulled pork sandwich, served on a sesame roll with harissa aoili and pickled onions ($9). He liked it, and said it was good but simple. I forgot to taste it (can you believe that?).

I had the feta cheese and tomato jam flatbread, with piquillo peppers and big fat capers ($9). I love their flatbreads (sometimes labeled as “cocas” on the menu)… and this one was no exception. The sauce was sweet and bright, and the bites of salty, pickly capers and chunks of feta were a nice addition.

We also shared a slice of zucchini cake for dessert. I liked it, but sliced cake is often my least favorite choice at restaurants, as it’s often refrigerated and tends to be dry. This one was a bit dry, though still flavorful. I didn’t love it nearly as much as the bittersweet chocolate cake we had there last week.

Hopefully I’ll have more food stuff to share with you soon. Justin and I have been in a winter rut of spaghetti, chili beans, and eggs with potatoes. I’m hoping to get motivated to cook more in the next few weeks. 🙂
