  • Dinner at Imperia

Justin and I had dinner at Imperia last night. I had been craving it for a while… it’s Asian fusion food, I suppose, and it reminds me of Hawaii.

We were seated at 6:45, and waited quite a while for the waitstaff to stop by and take our order (even just for drinks). We had hoped to order before 7:00, but apparently we didn’t, because we were charged full price for everything (rather than happy hour prices). This was a little annoying, because had we been attended to more quickly (waiting 15 minutes for your waitstaff to acknowledge you is not a good thing), we could have taken advantage of the lower prices. As a result, this dinner was mighty expensive, and not something I’d pay that much for again.

Justin had a Manhattan, and I had an Imperial Bubble Bath (it’s nice and girly, all pineappley and sweet). We had the house edamame and Justin had some miso soup. We love this edamame – sauteed and a bit charred, with red chiles and lemon. The miso soup was also really tasty.

Justin tried the duck spring rolls, which were good, and I had the pork and Asian pear shiu mai. I loved the shiu mai last time, but this time the filling seemed a bit too sour (lime? vinegar? too much pear?), and the pork extra chewy. I didn’t finish them.

Some nigiri… yellowtail, salmon and escolar for me, baby yellowtail, snapper and eel for Justin. Mine were so good I ordered another each of the escolar and salmon.

We ordered the poke, in hopes of it bringing us back to Oahu… but it was nothing like Hawaiian poke. Still, if you just think of it as a raw tuna dish with avocado, sriracha and white chocolate, it was pretty good.

We had the banana dessert, a steamed cake of banana rice with vanilla ice cream and caramel sauce. It came wrapped in a banana leaf like a little present. I loved the rice cake and caramel, but the ice cream was boring (Blue Bell, maybe?).

So, some good things, some bad things. And now I’m craving sushi. 🙂

  • tuesday.

Some days I make kale soup with Spanish chorizo and local salad greens for dinner. Some days dinner is just a bit of guacamole and some chocolate cake. 🙂

Tonight I’m at home alone, while Justin is out being athletic at the gym. I’m thinking about knitting, or maybe sewing. Or writing, or reading a scary book. Or taking a bubble bath, or baking a cake. Probably, I’ll just snuggle up with the kitty cats and do crosswords.

This is one of my favorite little corners of our home… it’s the space on top of our dresser, where I do my hair and makeup in the mornings. There’s a photo from our wedding day, and my favorite little elephant holding my wedding ring. There’s a tiny crystal vase that my sister-in-law brought back from somewhere in Europe (I really should know where), and a tiny Eiffel tower that we got on our honeymoon at Disneyworld. There’s a candy tin filled with pennies, which we shake at the kitties when they’re being bad. There’s a handmade headband I bought in New Orleans, and a gold cuff that I don’t wear enough. There are two lollipops that have been there forever.

It feels so decadent to have such a calm evening, to have time to notice these small things. I’ve been all activity and no rest for some time now. I just need to learn to soak up this quiet time… let it fill me up, weigh me down, ground me… so that when things get hectic, I can bring myself back to this place, this quiet, this calm.

Tuesday, Tuesday. I hope yours was great.

  • happy valentine’s day!

This morning my friends ran a half-marathon.

And I’m currently inspired by this post… I think that “Give More Love” is the best resolution ever.

  • on stress and vegetables

Oh, internets, I have stressed myself out to the max. Work has been stressful, and I have let it seep into the rest of my life. This makes me angry at myself, which stresses me out. Sheesh.

I spent a whole day this week in jury duty listening to arguments and testimonies in a grueling case, then spent a couple of hours deliberating about it. I am happy to serve as a juror; it’s one thing I can do for the community. But being a juror is so hard… you can only work with the information that has been given to you. You wish you had more evidence, or one more witness, or one more video… but all you have is what you have, and you’re expected to make a judgement on a person’s life based on that. It was very difficult and exhausting.

So when I got home from the courthouse, I ranted and raved to Justin (he’s so patient with me), and then we bundled up and walked down to 24 Diner for some grub. And for the record: 24 Diner makes my FAVORITE burger in all of Austin. Yup, I said it. It’s a thick patty, perfectly salted, with roasted tomatoes, cheddar, pickles and smoked aioli on a challah bun. So very good, and so comforting on a bad day.

Most nights of the week we’ve been cooking up our lovely Farmhouse produce. It’s so fun… I receive our bushel of produce on Tuesday, look through Eat Your Books for recipes, shop for any extra items (pasta, rice, beans), and cook it up. Last week we received cauliflower, broccoli, red-leaf lettuce, avocados, grapefruit, carrots, spring onions, cilantro, kale, spinach, and baby beets. This week our bushel was full of cauliflower, broccoli, butter lettuce, radishes, carrots, avocados, grapefruit, meyer lemons, red cabbage, arugula, cilantro, and the items I added to our order: local low-temp pasteurized whole milk, local eggs, and Farmhouse-made cauliflower giardiniera.

Tonight I roasted cauliflower and carrots with a bit of oil, salt, and pepper, then tossed them with a bit of browned butter; I served them with a salad of butter lettuce, radishes, carrots and avocado, along with sliced toast and butter. The great thing about this produce is that it really doesn’t need much to be amazing. It’s just good as-is.

So anyway, stress and stress and veggies and veggies. My life in a nutshell, lately. BUT! Tomorrow is a new day, and I am ready for it. I’m reading funny things like this, and watching inspiring videos like the one I posted below. I’m getting lots of hugs and kisses from Justin and the kitty cats, and I’m nibbling on dark chocolate. Most of all, I’m looking forward to our upcoming trip to Jamaica… I plan to spend every day lying on the beach, drinking fruity beverages with tiny umbrellas in them, and holding hands with my love. Stress and blues, begone! For I am done with thee.
