We had dinner last night at ESSR with our friend James. I heard their fried chicken was amazing, and it’s the special on Mondays.
James started with a pastis (served with water and huge ice cubes).
They have a new drink menu.
I tried the Summer Swizzle, which was summery and swizzly.
Justin had a michelada (not on the menu, but you can order it), made with fresh tomatoes and chiles. The rim was edged in a chile-salt-lime mix.
Later he had a sazerac.
We had a fromage plate. The feta with mint pesto was my favorite.
We also had a charcuterie plate. I liked the mustard.
I had the fried chicken with sweet potato mash and smothered beet greens. In the background is Justin’s short ribs with sweet potato mash and corn on the cob. I was worried the chicken would be overcooked, because the breading looked a bit dark, but it was light and not greasy (and maybe drizzled with honey?). It was really good. The beet greens weren’t my favorite, only because I’d much prefer kale or collards or something a bit firmer. Justin’s short ribs were melt-in-your-mouth yummy.
I had the terrine of crepes and strawberry jam again. It wasn’t as fresh as last time, and the cream seemed old. I still ate half of it.
Justin had the creme brulee again. He didn’t like as much as last time, either. He said it tasted refrigerator-y. He still finished it.
We had a good view of the kitchen.
Such a fun place. We left just as the band was starting… I HAVE to remember to go to ESSR on Wednesdays to see Datri Bean play.
