What I ate today: Thursday 10/30/08

Posted on October 30, 2008

Not a great food day…I’m not feeling so well, and so I’m not too hungry. (My office is scary…it seems like EVERYONE has been out sick sometime this week! I just keep washing my hands, washing my hands…) 7:45 a.m. – Shredded wheat cereal with soymilk 12:00 p.m. – Lunch at Blue Dahlia with my husband: Egg salad tartine (with organic greens and fresh dill, sprinkled with olive oil and dotted with capers…mmmmmm) and hot chai. (And also a piece of Justin’s chicken salad tartine with dried cranberries on top.) 2:00 p.m. – October birthdays celebration at work, where we watched the Thriller video and ate cake. I had a few bites of an ice cream cake, then discreetly threw it away. I don’t…

What I ate today – Wednesday 10/29

Just FYI, I’m playing with new formats and ideas for my little blog. For the next few days, I feel like listing everything I eat. Maybe it will get me to eat better. 8:30 a.m. – Swiss Miss Mocha Cappuccino (trying to warm up after a cold ride on my scooter to work) 12:30 p.m. – Lean Cuisine lasagna and chicken parmesan (Yuck. No more frozen dinners for me.) Also, Yoplait strawberry cheesecake flavor yogurt. (Eh. Yogurt’s just not my favorite thing. Unless it’s mixed with chopped honeycrisp apples and homemade chocolate granola. Which I didn’t have. But I did read this article on yogurt today, and may give Fage 0% a try.) 2:30 p.m. – A piece of Dove milk chocolate from my…

Back to Normal

I love Saturdays. Especially Saturday mornings. It feels like you have a zillion options for the weekend, so many things you can still get done. Should I embroider? Knit? Go to the library? Bake cookies? Write? Nap? Read? Anything is possible on a Saturday morning. This is the first weekend in a long time that hasn’t been jam-packed with plans for us, and I hereby resolve to completely enjoy it. We wrapped up the film festival on Thursday (two more great films: Synecdoche, New York and Two Lovers), and so it’s back to the kitchen for me. This week I’m trying to buy minimal groceries and use up what’s in our pantry and fridge. So this week’s meals probably won’t be too interesting, but…

Busy Busy

Internets! I’ve missed you! It has been such a crazy week for us, from dinner parties to food events to films. Last Thursday we went to La Dolce Vita for the first time. It was fun, but I don’t think I’ll go back next year. The tickets were pretty pricey, and many of the vendors had already run out of food an hour into the event. I was very disappointed by this…it seems to me that the point of the event is to make people aware of new restaurants and what they have to offer. When a restaurant can’t manage to prepare for an event and have enough food to last even halfway through the evening, it makes me think that dining at the…

The Oyster Club

Posted on October 13, 2008

Last night was the kick-off event for The Oyster Club, a new venture from the Rude Mechanicals, a local theater group here in Austin. We hopped in the car and drove out to the Plant at Kyle, which was so insanely gorgeous, we’re trying to scheme up a way to hold an event there ourselves. There were freshly shucked oysters direct from the Gulf of Mexico… Peel-and-eat shrimp, so fresh and delicious… Amazing tea from Zhi Tea (I gulped down the Peach Ginger Oolong tea like it was going out of style)…  Cocktails from the Tipsy Texan and Paula from Paula’s Texas Orange & Lemon… Jambalaya and Oysters Rockefeller and grilled prawns and grilled snapper (holy smokes, that was good), and lemon bars and cocoa…

October

So last night I made this dish, another delicious one from Gourmet magazine (though it didn’t elicit the emphatic oohs and aahs from Justin that the Sole Amandine did). The sauce has a meaty texture, not from the little pieces of chicken, but from the finely chopped mushrooms that mix so easily into the tomatoes and coat every strand of pasta just so. I changed a few things, of course, and in the future, I’d probably leave out the chicken and top it with a hefty grating of Parmesan cheese. Me and cheese, we get along really well. In other news, we’re going to the Oyster Club Launch Party this weekend, and I’m so excited about it. There will be lots of fresh Gulf…
